Volvo XC90R - Volvo Selekt Nightmare Please help! - Saleem Javed

After spending almost 20K at a Volvo dealer in Yorkshire I have been left shocked and disgusted. I really need some advice.

The car is a 2013 XC90R sold as excellent condition. Only bought 24 hours ago I brought it home to find significant repair work carried out on passenger side. I noticed it due to the poor quality of the workmanship. Definately not Volvo OE standard and whole side has seen filler (which is visible through the paint) and new paint on parts of the door with evidence of oversrpay.

I cant ignore the issue as its obvious now and stands out. They wont take it back. What should I do??? I really feel stupid as I have been duped by a Selekt dealer. I genuinely trusted the Selekt process.

Are you saying you did not inspect the car first? I mean, filler visible through the paint?

Others will advise, but it seems to me you have a case for rejecting the car, if the sale is only 24 hours old.

Inform the dealership (in writing) that you wish to reject the car under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations. Under those regs, it is an offence to omit information which would otherwise influence a consumer's buying decision - for example, previous accident damage.

This being the third thread in a week about Volvo's when there's been nothing for months as rgeards general issues rings alarm bells with me as a possible purchaser of an XC40 (one of a few on the shortlist).

Based on the OPs allegation, it raises serious questions over 'approved manufacturer warranties'.

But if it is bad as OP maintains, must be rejected, and offers of a proper repair refused - bodged once, whose to say it wont be again with rust appearing in 6 months? And the OP should not listen to the 'we have to talk to Volvo' nonsense. Contract between OP and dealer, dealer misled customer, dealer needs to resolve.

One question - was OP shown HPI report or conduct his own?

Contact Volvo customer services themselves and bypass the dealer. It’s likely this was a poor quality repair done by the previous lease/PCP owner before returning the car. It doesn’t mean the car is bad or likely to give trouble but it does need to be properly rectified or it’ll cripple its resale value. You should have spent more time checking this before agreeing to buy and it could be argued that you have accepted its condition if you did indeed view it before buying.

It’ll be easier for the dealer to spend a few hundred quid fixing the problem than for them to argue with Volvo. Usually a polite email this direction works wonders. However as for your right to reject it well that is only an option if the vehicle goes wrong within the first 30 days. You can then reject it outright instead of allowing them to repair it. However it hasn’t actually gone wrong, the paintwork just isn’t up to your standards. It can be argued that it is a used car and some repairs are to be expected. I don’t think you’d win a case based on some paint repairs especially if you physically viewed it before buying.

Try working with customer services before throwing your wallet at your lawyer who’ll happily tell you that you’ve a case as he’ll coin it in either way.

'Volvo approved' used must mean something, or there would be no point in going tp a franchised dealer and paying top price.

From volvocars.com: yes, it does offer exchange rather than refund, but it also says they are committed to making sure you are 100% satisfied - it doesn't sound as if the response you have had matches that claim either.

"SATISFACTION GUARANTEE

We are committed to making sure you are 100% satisfied with your Volvo Selekt car. That's why every single car comes with our 30 day exchange guarantee.

If you are dissatisfied with your Selekt used car within 30 days or 1,500 miles driving, whichever comes first, we'll exchange the car for another of equivalent value."

Sorry to hear of your problem, the Main? dealer must have known of the filler repair and have taken advantage. Do what the other backroomer said, reject it by special delivery so there is no 'we didn't get it'. Good luck.
