Hyundai i30 - broken door handle on delivery (lease) - Teshy

Hi all,

Hoping to get some advice on here... we have a Hyundai i30 on lease - 18 plate and 14 miles on the clock.

The same day of delivery (the car had not left the drive), my dad goes out just ok to have a look, opens the rear door on the passenger side and the entire handle came straight off!

Spoke to the lease company and they advised to book it in with Hyundai and car was taken over today. However, took it to them today and Hyundai garage claim (after looking at it for all over 2 minutes) that it is not a manufacturing fault and that the door handle has been broken and said it will cost £120 if we want them to fix it.

Spoke again with the leasing company who said to take it back to Hyundai for a second look to the same garage but suspect they will say the same. Anyone know where I stand?? As far as I am concerned this is not something that should occur ever, let alone on delivery!

1. Phone Hyundai.

2. Not your problem. Leasing companies problem. Tell them in writing by email and post, Recorded delivery. that you will reject the car. you have 30 days from purchase, or they do.

Stand firm!

Thanks for your response!! Just out of interest, which legislation am I using to reject the car?

Just to be clear on the advice, should I book in taking it back to Hyundai tomorrow and also send the notice of rejection to my leasing company?

You'd be using the Consumer Rights Act (2015) to reject the car.

However, I'd hazard that even the suggestion of rejection, and you quoting the law on which you'd be making the rejection, is likely to get someone at the lease company moving.

No, don't book it in with Hyundai. Tell the lease company it is their problem, to fix at their expense.

I don't get what goes-on between manufacturers and lease companies.

Once had a new Vauxhall Cavalier company car on lease in 1993, (the firm had a new MD who sold the all company owned cars and got new ones on lease). At the first service the trim on the rear passenger door had interferered with that on the front door and come adrift (manufacturing fault - it needed a new trim), but the dealer would not replace it under warranty as Autolease had told them just to "fix it"! What a crap way to work, I was not impressed and just glad it wasn't my car (but it did have the bullet-proof Isizu 1.7 TD engine which was a good-un).

I Have a 17 reg new generation i30 and last week took it in for its first service.

I mentioned that the driver and passenger doors can sometimes stick out and you have to push them back in. I was told that they new about this and had a moderfication fot it.

When I got the car back they were alot better. Hope this helps

That's outrageous from the Hyundai Garage! How can you break a door handle anytime let alone on a brand new car! I'd be onto Hyundai HQ pointing out abysmal attitude from that particular dealer. And as above, the law is on your side if it comes to it.

Advice worked a charm. Called up leasing company and said I intended to reject the car. Within 10 minutes I had a call back saying they would pay for the fix (I had a quotation on paper from Hyundai for £90+vat)

Called Hyundai to book in the work and guy on the phone said he doesn't think the price we have includes painting the door handle and if required, this would be an extra cost! He is checking if the handle comes in the right colour and calling me back tomorrow morning... said could be £70 extra for colouring - and here I thought leasing was supposed to be low maintenance!
