Hello all

Ive decided after many years to stop doing PCP and buy a car outright have about £7k to spend and want a Jag XJ around 2006.. there are certainly plenty on the market and I’m sure a lot of rubbish.

Just wondering is this the best one to get or can anyone recommend a good specialist dealer.

Thanks

Harry

Forget the diesels! At this money it will be an expensive wallet bursting explosion waiting to happen. The Ford 3.0 V6 petrol is pretty robust though, my neighbour has a 2003 example that he’s had from new with only a few minor electrical gremlins blotting its history. Does 25-30mpg day to day but even the diesel will struggle to get much past 35mpg and is vastly more complex and thus likely to go wrong spectacularly.

The petrol 4.2 V8’s are prone to timing chain tensioner issues but are much better than earlier 4.0 examples in the previous gen cars. Quality isn’t brilliant, with loads of cheap Ford switchgear and the alloy body panels are costly to replace and paint so check insurance costs before committing. Many are written off for relatively minor bumps as a result.

Buy only with a full dealer or specialist history and leave any with gaps. Lovely big cars to drive though and I’ve my eye on elderly neighbours silver 6cyl for whenever he wants something smaller or gives up driving. His is exactly the one you want, right engine, perfect history (Jag main dealer 2mins away) and well below average mileage at the hands of someone who could afford to buy one new if he wanted. Be wary of cars run by people who can’t afford to maintain it properly and don’t buy one if you’re skint or have a tendency to scrimp.

I had an 05 diesel bought with 17k on the odo at 3 years old. Ran it to mid 80k. My previous Jags had been petrol and I wish I had bought a petrol X350 instead of the diesel. Nice enough and good on fuel. Once drove from Luxembourg to Perpignan on 1 tank. Mid 40's easily seen but, mostly, late 30's. At 60k the pair of DPFs failed, had them cleaned, failed again. Top side of £1k all in with the clean then replacement. Other things to watch for are parking sensor fails, had several and they come unpainted. Also suspension compressor. It was the most problematic of my XJs. The X300 XJR was ace and the 3.6XJ 40 the most comfy. However, if chance/money allowed I would have a 3.0, 3.5 or 4.2 X350 again.

Rgds and happy hunting
