We bought a three year old Volvo C30 seven years ago, which we are very happy and content with, and after having it serviced by our local garage over the years we decided that it was time the now ten year old car had a proper main Volvo agency birthday service. We were given every courtesy and attention and came away inpressed and assured that we had made the correct choice. This was added to by notifcation that we had also been given 12 months free road side assist cover from Volvo.

Some days later whilst driving along a warning symbol appeared on the dash display indicating a fault to the engine. I quickly pulled in switched off and set about checking for the obvious signs of a fault and could detect nothing. Re starting the engine and checking further everything appeared OK. Checking in the owners handbook the symbol indicated a fault with the emmissions system. I contacted the Volvo garage who informed me that they would need to have the car come in and they would carry out a diagnostic check at £105 plus VAT to discover what the problem was. I declined their offer. I next called upon my road side assist perk only to be told that this type of issue was outside of the remitt for their service. This set me into re examining the paperwork from the service. I was shocked to discover several errors which left me wondering as to the value of trusting them at all in the first place. The car was listed as 2.0 litre, its actually 1.8. The service mileage was vastly different to the recorded mileage. A box had been ticked that the automatic tyre pressure monitor had been reset, it doesnt have one. The hand brake was stated to have been adjusted, it now remains on after releasing and breaks free with a noticeable thud and jerk.

I was coaxed into having the engine oil system flushed and also the fuel system flushed. This latter item left wondering if this had been an instrumental trigger in causing the emmission fault to register. Finally I had to resort to paying another Volvo garage to reset the fault display for £40 plus VAT. A far from happy experience overall which has left me determined to take charge of matters myself and I am now looking for a workshop manual which todate appears to be rarer than rocking horse dirt. Any suggestions?

Most of the mechanical bits on these are Ford based,so may be an idea to buy a manual for a similar age Focus.

C30 workshop manual. Thank you for that tip, it might at least rescue the handbrake dilemma for a start.

Perhaps you got used to the handbrake operating the way it did and now it operates as it should?

The hand brake had neen exceptionlally good over the seven years we have owned the car. However, in recent times it had become less and less effective on an incline and had to be pulled on harder. This to me hinted that an adjustment would be needed to restore the otherwise good performance. What was done did not achieve an improvement but also left the operation very doubtfull. In my experience I would examine the mechanism to check for free movement of the parts and also the state of the brake lining. Which is why I am seeking the manual before diving in myself. If all else fails then I suppose I will have to fall back on my own engineering skills and experience or even sell the car. But thanks anyway for at least thinking about it.

Brakes should need very little or no adjustment - the brake calipers should self adjust as the pads wear - If in recent times it has become less effective then it suggests that the brakes need attention eg new pads / disks or seized calipers (pistons or whole caliper can't move)

Strip down the rear brakes to check and sort. If you are not sure what to do then find an independant garage who does - brakes are life critical!

Couple of "should" s above save it from being a work of fiction.

Automatic adjusters on older cars frequently don't work. I don't think they've ever worked on any car I've ever bought.

When they don't work manual adjustment is required, which is much more difficult with an automatic adjuster than with a manual one.

(Manual brake adjusters are my idea of automotive luxury, last experienced on a Lada Mk1 saloon many years ago. Can't afford it now.)

You will probably have to do the mechanical equivalent of keyhole surgery through the drum (I'm assuming this car isn't discs on the back) backplate in order to back off the shoes enough to get the drums off. If there's a wear lip you might have to hit them a lot too.

Once you get the drums off and clean everything off and lubricate it (and maybe grind off the wear lip) the automatic adjusters might start to work, but I wouldn't bet on it. If they dont you'll just have to repeat the manual procedure every now and then. It should get easier.

This is all finicky and a bit of a pain, which tends to mean that you can't trust anyone else to do it properly for you.

The faults could be coincidence, they might not be. But no dealer workshop will ever apply the same levels of fastidiousness and care that a conscientious owner will.

All too often, larger dealers' workshops suffer from 'fault code blindness' and simply substitute parts, overlooking the actual root cause of a fault.

"I contacted the Volvo garage who informed me that they would need to have the car come in and they would carry out a diagnostic check at £105 plus VAT to discover what the problem was. I declined their offer."

The dealer clearly needs to see the car to diagnose - presumably if the fault had been caused by the service in some way then you probably woudln't have been charged for this

"I next called upon my road side assist perk only to be told that this type of issue was outside of the remitt for their service. "

The road side assist is for when you have broken down and can't drive the car

"The hand brake was stated to have been adjusted, it now remains on after releasing and breaks free with a noticeable thud and jerk."

Presuming this is not just after washing the car - take it back!

"I was coaxed into having the engine oil system flushed and also the fuel system flushed. "

Can be a great idea especially with engines prone to oilway sludging

"Finally I had to resort to paying another Volvo garage to reset the fault display for £40 plus VAT. "

Wouldn't it have been a good idea to check what the potential fault was before the display was reset? it may come back to haunt you.

Ineffective hadbrakes tend to be due to crud gumming up the pad mouting points and all the surfaces at the disk where pads move. Requires a full stripdown , clean , bgrease with silicon grease and carefull reassembly. Unsurprising due to frequent bombardment by salty water mixed with grit and mud.

Jazz's rear handbrake became slowly less efficient in 5 years of ownership (full Honda service0, so I stripped it down, new pads etc and serviced as above.

Now very efficient.

Time consuming job and messy tho.. 1 hour each side..(I fitted all new fitting metal)..
