My local shell is charging 129p per litre, it must rank as one of the most expensive in south west London, is this a record. The Asda 5 miles away is 120p and Tesco is 121p and the averge of Shell and BP's accross south west London around 125p..

Presumably frnachise operators are free to do as they please.

any thoughts?

Asda was 117.7 when I filled up last week, Tesco was 119.9 when we drove past earlier today so I would expect Asda to be 118.7 now (they are always 1.2 a litre less).

What do I do. I go to the place thats priced competively and convenient. That means if I need fuel and am in town I call at Asda and if shop at Tesco and need fuel i fill up there and get the points.

Places that charge 9 pence a litre extra deserve to go out of business but there will always be some who believe its better fuel so worth paying extra. Wifies uncle will only use Shell in his mower since that is what the shop told him to use. They siad supermarket fuel would wreck the engine. The Tecumesh in mine is still going strong and has suffered almost 30 years of abuse on Asda petrol.

Hardly use any petrol now.

Diesel was 139.9 at Leigh Delamere M4 services couple of weeks ago, but noticed it was 141.9 at Scratchwood M1 London today, you'd have to be desperate.

Diesel is fairly priced around us, 119 or thereabouts, but i noticed at Morrisons Wednesbury it was around 4p cheaper than whatever the price was locally when i passed by last week, only 5 mins from the M6 jct 9, 2 mins if you avoid peak times.

Interesting it's fairly priced down your end GB. Northampton has long been, and remains, a place where fuel costs remain stubbornly high. Last time I noticed it was 122.9 for petrol and 124.9 for diesel. Consistently 2-3p cheaper in Leicester where Fosse Park is less than 5mins from M1. It was even cheaper in, of all places, Kendal when we were up there for Xmas. Suspect key factor is presence of Asda who unlike other supermarkets have a national pricing policy.

Presumably the competition at Wednesbury is Costco?.

I haven't a clue if there's a Costco in the area Bromp, but i went past Morrisons Wednesbury again this morning, petrol 112.7 Diesel 114.7, that's 5.2p cheaper than Kettering for Diesel, and whopping 27.2p cheaper per litre than Scratchwood services.

Sure there used to be on near IKEA but their website puts the Birmingham warehouse as being at Nechells. But 114.7 is a whole 10.2p cheaper that Sainsburys at Sixfields was when I passed half an hour ago.

Our local outlet sells at about 1.20 or 1.24 - it's not a supermarket. For many years some Brits have searched desperately for any station which charges 1p less than anywhere else. I gave up doing that long ago, especially as there are many fewer stations than there once were. I get fuel where convenient, and preferably a 'reputable' brand. As every extra mile costs about 12p, it's hardly worth going far out of one's way unless it's for a fill-up and the price difference is several pence.

Supermarkets can generally charge less because they already own the land the filling station is built on, and they can use the fuel price as a loss-leader.

Franchise / independent stations don't always own the land, so their costs are higher.

Different petrol stations charge different prices...no more complicated than that...they charge what they think their customers will pay.

In my previous incarnation I remember taking part in a 'business game' intended to educate scientists in the rules of the business jungle. It took the form of managing a petrol station in competition with others in an imaginary district, so we could find out how far we could cut prices to increase volume, while still making a profit. I suppose the model still applies to most bulk commodities, but it must depend on continual snooping to keep tabs on the competition.

That's extortionate!

I'm paying £128.9 for V-Power, in Yorkshire.

filled up at £1.159 per litre at the weekend ... Sainsbury & Tesco price, other places in town are dearer, overall I've not seen cheaper anywhere else, even in similar stores nearby towns the petrol's dearer

Fuel stations charge what they feel drivers will pay.

The opening of a new BP station not far from me has seen the prices at the Esso station about 400m away (which was the only station for about 3 miles) increase.

The BP opened just before Christmas and were charging 5p a litre more than Esso. Rather than maintain some competition Esso increased their prices and now match them.

Last Saturday petrol at both was 127.9, diesel 132.9. I paid 115.9 at Asda and 121.9 at another Esso.

With crude prices increasing expect pump pirces to increase over the next few weeks.

I guess that new BP will have a 'convenience store' attached? In which case some customers will get petrol as part of a bigger 'shop', and may not argue so much about the cost?

I used to fill up with the branded brand, and pay extra for it. Then I read the Which? online article which said that the extra price was not worth the benefits.

The last two rtimes that I filled up cost 116.9 / ltr at Tesco, Handforth and the same exactly at Morrisons, Cheadle Heath.

My experience is that my diesel runs more smoothly after a 10-litre shot of 'super' - in my case Shell V-nitro. I don't buy it often; the car gets a treat every now and then, and the effect lasts quite a while. If the supermarket sold something similar I would get it there. I'm quite happy to use regular supermarket diesel.

EDIT - sorry, the thread is about 'petrol', but posters have been quoting prices for both,

My local shell which 1/4 mile from my door is 128.9 for diesel in Northamptonshire!

Cheapest I've found in North Wales, away from supermarkets, is a small independent just down the road from us, which is regularly a couple of pence per litre cheaper than its nearest rival. A lot of taxi drivers use it, which says it all.

Dearest is one just off the A55 which obviously caters mainly for expense account consumers who are not particularly bothered about finding the best price, but just want convenience. It has a McDonalds and KFC on the same small retail park so that any non-commercial motorist caught short of fuel and forced to use their facilities can drown their sorrows in barbecue sauce.

It must be at least five pence per litre dearer than anywhere else, perhaps more.

Here in the desert of sleepy Rutland, my local village garage is 121.9 and that's attended service...yes, seriously...you can still get the "old fashioned" service here...at the Coop supermarket store a few miles away, it's 119.9..but that's yer typical DIY fill of course.

There seem to some big variations at the moment, even ignoring motorwasy and stations on busy routes such as the A1, A303 (which I happen to have travelled this morning) etc.

I have just paid 133.9 for V-Power diesel at Shell Cressex in High Wycombe. Ordinary diesel was 123.9, petrol 121.9.

The comment about Asda is probably right. Cheapest around here (but usually too far for a diversion for me) is the stations around the Dome roundabout, Watford - there's an Asda nearby.charging 119.7 for petrol, 121.7 for diesel currently according to petrolprices.com.
