Toyota Yaris - New car (not for me !) - RobJP

Well, after a considerable amount of searching, we finally found a replacement for my sister-in-law's old Corsa.

A 2011/11 plate Yaris 1.3VVTi, manual gearbox full Toyota SH, 2 owners from new (the young lady who has had it for 3 years has emigrated to the USA for work, so her parents selling the car for her), in white. With 12 months MOT (just done at Toyota dealers, along with a service). Advisories on front brake pads looking thin, also on sidewalls on both rear tyres, which look old enough to be original, amazingly.

The bumpers are a bit shabby, there is a nice little dent in the roof (I assume from something heavy being placed on it at some point), and another dent in the bonnet (this one looks like someone forgot to put the bonnet stay arm back into it's place properly). Inside is absolutely immaculate however.

The price ? A very reasonable £3,450. A pair of new Continentals for the back will be about £130-140. Car tax only £30 a year.

So that's the sis-in-law sorted for motoring for the next few years. Her son is a repair engineer for a big plant hire firm, and her nephew is an engineer at BAE, so they will do the brake pads and regular servicing for her.

Sounds like a good choice, Rob. Someone might be able to push out the dent in the roof from the inside.

Excellent, good car well looked after so mechanically fine (pads and tyres are pocket money cost), cheaper due to the odd dent and scratches which is probably a blessing in disguise because when it collects a few from the total incompetents we have to share parking areas with it won't be so disappointing.

Well bought.

Great little cars...my wife is on her second Yaris..a 2013 1.33 manual..(had a 2007 1.3).. and she loves it.

Both have been utterly reliable.

We collected it last night, was being sold over near Conwy, about 30 miles from us.

My wife drove it back, once she'd gotten used to it not having that low-down diesel torque (she stalled it twice in the first 100 yards), she found it quite nippy.

From being on here I've seen various concerns about the 1.0 petrol engine, and the sis-in-law only does about 6k miles per annum, so the diesel was out of the question. Same for the MMT autobox.

We'd looked at a couple of Corsa's. She's been very happy with her old one, and has had it 9 years. It's a 51 plate, but had now really started to reach the end of life - rust and electrical niggles mainly, the engine and gearbox feel as strong as ever. But the ones we looked at, even getting out some distance, were either terribly maintained, in shoddy condition, overpriced, or (amazingly) a combination of all 3.

The Fiesta was another possible - avoiding the ecoboost, and going for something like the 1.25. But, again, there was very little on the market that was reasonable for the money.

So many cars initially appeared decent, but digging into the MOT history brought up a litany of failures from surprisingly low ages and mileages. I'm a bit of a believer in looking after a car properly, and if a car fails the MOT on 4 bald tyres, I'm pretty convinced that the owner doesn't look under the bonnet ever, either.

Anyway, I'll update as it goes on. Hopefully it'll do her for a decade or so !

I wish they hadn't made the new model so damn ugly!

I wish they hadn't made the new model so damn ugly!

That goes for almost the whole current UK Toyota line up, apart from the GT86 or whatever its called and Hilux.

They still offer decent looking cars in the US and other markets, but even the Lexus range they've been busy batting with the ugly stick, why i haven't a clue, given how reliable and competent the cars are, especially the hybrids, they should be outselling every other make.

A good car, well bought. I'd happily buy or recommend a well maintained Yaris, especially the 1.33 petrol. Had the boot been slightly deeper we would've had one instead of the Polo we currently have but pram didn't fit by the tiniest of margins.

That 1.3 VVTI can really lift its skirts and go after 3K RPM until it hits the rev limiter. It'll do 80 in third!

The big wire spring on the front pads is a right royal PITA to replace, I suggest you take a picture before removing it!
