Autos L. Foot braking - barney100

HJ was extoling L foot breaking in the Telegraph this weekend. I have been driving autos for years and have tried the L foot method but it dosen't feel safe to me. Some folks may find it ok but my R foot feels to have control while the L is like bowing a violin with a hammer. In an emergency the natural thing for me is to operate the brake with the R foot and surely instinct in that situation has to be right. Any thoughts?

There's an ongoing disagreement on this - my view is that those who learn to drive automatics may well get a marginal advantage from left-foot braking - but those who drive both automatics and manuals, or switch later in life are better sticking with right-foot braking.

When the s*** hits the fan, I'll rely on my instinctive reaction to right-foot brake so no point trying it any other time.

The only time i've ver used LFB is under extreme angles loading a car transporter with one of the new type of unfit for maneuvering automated manual/dul clutch type boxes, never needed to LFB with a proper auto.

Like you Barney if i braked with my left foot it would be full ABS all action scenario.

Braking using your left foot is to maintain proper control at low speeds whilst manoeuvering or parking. Your right foot can then add a little throttle if needed with no danger of stamping on the throttle instead of the brake.

For normal driving above parking speeds revert to right foot only for throttle or brake.

Using just the right foot is the cause of many elderly drivers with automatic cars having "out of control" accidents when parking I suspect.

I find left braking so natural in my auto and do it all the time but strangely, if I am driving the wifes manual I instictively brake with my right foot and never feel the urge for the left to foot to get active.

I am 100% in agreement with Pica. However, as long as you don't cause an accident or blame the car on your own stupidity, then do what you want. No point arguing about it - you either get it or you don't. The world will not suddenly break into unremitting peace if we all braked with our left feet.

Absolutely, Happy Blue - this topic comes up every few months with the same arguments, and doesn't get any more interesting.

There are plenty of good reasons for adopting LFB, well set out by HJ and others; but I haven't done so personally, precisely because my wife's car is a manual. But Pica manages it without trouble, which just goes to show that we are all different.

Each to their own - although driving is largely instinctive, and I wouldn't advocate changing the habit of a lifetime if like me you've been driving for 50 years.

I think that anyone who ever drives manual gearbox vehicles should never use left foot braking. I've never used it on an auto and I can't think when I would need to.

If you have an auto only licence and so never, ever drive manual cars, then left foot braking would be OK.

I've had several manuals, two autos and driven autos on business trips in the USA, never had problems changing to LFB in autos and RFB in manuals. At one time I had an auto, the wife had a manual, so drove both often.

I accept that some people find (or would find) LFB a problem.

If you usually drive a manual and switch to auto I would seriously advise you to tuck your left foot well out of the way of the pedals because if you go for the non existant clutch with the left foot you might find yourself hitting the brake and executing an emergency stop!

From previous comments, it seems very clear that LFB works for some people but not for others; only-automatic drivers have a different perspective to drivers who regularly drive both types of transmission.
"Standardised" controls in cars are still a long way off and every manufacturer thinks they are right. (Toyota, I'm looking at you and the stupid Avensis parking brake button, and there are many more "sinners".) Some serious research is urgently needed into gear selector operation (the "gate" layout, need for indents, pushes or pulls, lights, buzzers, whatever) as well as aspects like pedal size, shape, position and angle for both manuals and automatics.
