KIA Niro - The new must-have option - colinh

We're all familar with the exorbitantly-priced metallic paint options; Kia appears to have reached new heights with their Niro pricing in Spain - paint is now a priced option - metallics €450 + tax - plain white €150 + tax - no "free" choices available. They don't have a configurator on their UK website, so can't check if it's spread there - probably will if they can get away with it.

Some makes offer say 1or 2 std colour £0, metallic say £500 & special finish paint £800/£1,000.

I cannot see any maker in the UK pricing a car with all paint finishes as an extra as the maker could not sell a car unpainted - it would just rust away.

Although, I know in Northern Ireland, not so long ago, a new house could be bought unpainted internally as standard. Bare walls & woodwork.

My plan is always to try & buy a model with the options already standard & avoid the "options list" like the plague.

If it is metallic & in stock you can often blag that "for free" as they would rather sell a car in stock than order a std colour as a factory order.

It's been happening for ever in the UK - delivery is an extra cost item - that is still charged even if you collect the car from the factory

That's very good advice for several reasons, not least that extras don't get included in any discount offered. It's a particular issue if you want to buy a BMW, where a lot of things standard oin other makes are extra (including, unforgivably, lumbar support).

If the cost of options offends you, don't go near premium/luxury sectors!

Otherwise it's swings and roundabouts - if you don't want to get skinned on option prices buy a nearly new car and live with whatever is standard - but if you're specific about what options you "must" have then buying new with the options specified is the only way and then keep a long time to make it economic.

So Kia in Spain is going the "Ryanair route"! Perhaps we'll soon be returning to the heady days of the 1970s when manufacturers piled on charges for "extras" like seat belts and number plates which were legally mandated.
"Delivery charge" is one that particularly irks me. Having recently shelled out a fairly substantial sum for a brand new Toyota Auris, I find that the delivery charge is from manufacturer via the Spanish importer all the way to the dealer - a delivery that cannot physically be eliminated from the equation! - but I am expected to make the last 10km of the journey from home to dealer (metro or bus plus Shanks' pony) myself, although the dealer has offered to collect me from the metro station!
