Hyundai Tucson CRTD 2007 - Garage should have advised crank sensor replacemen - slippy118

Had the clutch and DMF replaced a month ago. The car went in on the back of a recovery vehicle because after filling up with fuel and then a short journey, it would not start. Apparently, at the garage, the mechanic got it started after repeated attempts on the starter and diagnosed that perhaps I had let the fuel get too low.

Clutch is ok now but I have had starting problems, which have got so bad that it eventually fired up after a recovery technician tried to power it across a car park on the starter motor power. So fed up with it, I took the vehicle to a garage close to home. I am expecting the problem to be diagnosed as the crank sensor, parts £100 + labour £300. Apparently the sensor is around the back of the engine, parts have to be removed to get to it, an easy job if it is done at the same time as clutch replacement.

Is there any claim against the garage that did the clutch replacment for not diagnosing properly and not advising that crank sensor replacement at the same time that the clutch was done.

"you are expecting the problem to be diagnosed as ..."

If you're such an expert, far more expert than the garage that replaced the clutch and DMF, then you'd surely have been 'expected' to ask them to replace the crank sensor when they replaced the clutch / DMF ?

If a garage advised replacing parts randomly, just because it was convenient for them to do so while they've got other bits taken out, even if the parts weren't knackered, you'd probably be asking if you could claim against them for doing so ...

The garage closer to home said that it might be the immobiliser and try using the key entry for a while and charged £120 for diagnostic check.

The problem persisted so I took it to a main dealer for a diagnostic check. Main dealer said diagnostic check says everything is ok but a battery check says that the battery is not holding charge and cost is £98 just for diagnostic / test drive / advice.

New battery fitted at local national parts supplier. Still had the problem two more times and then after driving 4x50 miles motorway journeys it now seems ok.

Have I got a claim against any one?

No.

Firstly you have a nine year old car. You won't lose much in depreciation but the quid pro quo is stuff going wrong.

Garage A was asked to replace clutch/DMF. They did so. Unless you can show they dislodged something no laibility there.

You've had two further diagnostics done by different garages both with inconclusive results. Not unusual.

Now looks as though battery was duff. Immobilser and starting problems are a likely symptom of a duff battery.

Battery replaced and a couple of runs for car to unscramble it's electronic brains and all seems OK.
