Small car with a big boot - Avant

Rather than muddle this with the spare wheel thread, I think it'll be interesting toi take up Engineer Andy's challenge to those of us who enjoy advising on buying a new car.

If I've got the message right, Andy, you want something no bigger - ideally smaller - than your Mazda 3 but with plenty of room for luggage. As you rightly imply, there are a lot of small cars around which can seat a family of four but haven't a hope of taking their luggage if they want to go away in the car.

Not sure what your budget is, but one of the small estates like the SEAT Leon ST or the Skoda Fabia could be worth a look. Or the Nissan Note - this passed our 'holiday abroad hire car test' in that we could get two large and two small cases in the square, deep boot. The newer Note seems to have shrunk (maybe so as not to compete head-on with the Juke): the one I'm thinking of was the old shape.

Venga or IX20 remove the spare wheel cover and there is a huge extra amount of space, rear seat back tilts forward too.

I’m unsure what is meant here by “small car”. How small is small?

My wife drives a Citroen C1. Now that really is small. It’s cramped in the back and the boot is truly tiny. It can’t be expanded either as you can’t get a tow bar, nor will it take roof bars. Also can’t use a tailgate bike rack as the hatch is glass! (the latter issue also afflicts a friend with a Golf GTD – the plastic spoiler prevents the use of a bike carrier)

We recently bought our eldest son an ‘03 Polo. It was his choice of car. I would regard it as a small car, but it really isn’t that small. There is reasonable room in the back for two adults. A few weeks ago we needed him to carry some ‘stuff’ for us. I must say I was surprised at just how ‘large’ the boot seems for a small car. Not only that but you could use a roof box with bars and it will take a rear bike carrier. Rear seats can be folded too. He’s going to uni soon, so that capacity is going to come in handy.

Oh, and my sons Polo has a steel spare wheel below the boot floor. I think the tyre is full size.

For a properly small car, the Fiat Panda has a surprisingly large boot as we found when hiring one on holiday. These things are relative obviously, and it won't hold as much as a Mondeo, but it does much better than many similar cars.

Going up in size to the Astra/Focus sized hatchbacks they are all much the same size so access is the only real difference. After is predecessor having the worst loading aperture ever, the current model Leon is about as good as it gets, without stepping up to a long hatchback such as an Octavia, Insignia etc.

In terms of boot size for money spent, I'd go for one of the van derived cars, whichever one was on the best offer at the time - none will be great to drive but will do the job.

Wife has the new model Note and its got an excellent boot for a car in its class. Our Acenta Premium has the sliding rear seat which is really useful on occations. Comparing the car to my Leon move the seat to give a comparable amount of rear leg room and you get a bigger boot than the Leon, Move it back and the boot space is about the same as the Leon but you have leg room aproaching a Skoda Superb. As I said in the other thread full size spare fits without affecting the quoted boot space. Basically the Note has more interior space than a Leon in a smaller package.

Kia Venga is pretty good but we found the seats too high for my mother and the mother in law to comfortably use. Its also way more expensive than the Note spec for spec after discounts are factored in.

Leon ST has a huge boot as does the Civic tourer.

Peugeot 308 hatch and estate both have the biggest boots in the class but they both have rediculously restricted rear leg room.

As everthing in life its a compromise but some are better than others.

Best compromise we have had with regards to overall size, rear leg room and boot space was the Mk 1 Kia Ceed SW.

Most space in a small car = boxy! The more box like the car is, the more space inside there will be. So cars with upright rear hatches have more useable space that slanting hatches.

When we only had two young children and went on holiday we would rent small estate cars. Best we had was a Polo estate. Very useful. When daughter arrived, we needed more space. The best solution was a Kangoo, Doblo or similar.

I think Fiat and Citroen still sell a small car based van with seats, windows and luggage space. Probably not great cars, but if needs must....

The family is now older and son #1 drives a 2004 Punto. We had to go away for the weekend and he wanted to drive - we needed two cars anyway - instead of getting everything into my E-class (which may not have been big enough anyway for what we were taking) we took the Punto and the Evoque. Punto surprisingly spacious and took almost as much stuff as the Evoque and much easier to load.

As part of my recent review of cars I went around with a large suitcase (with 4 wheels) to compare boot sizes

With the rear seats pushed forwards the boot on the current model Nissan Note worked for me, big enough for two cases with ease.

Tried the 308, Pulsar, Leon, Rapid Spaceback, none were as spacious, although the Rapid (not spaceback) and Seat Toledo could both fit both cases.

A couple of years ago my dad had to pick up some family members from Manchester Airport - there were three of them all with luggage for 2 weeks away.

All three suitcases and small bags fitted in the boot of his Jazz - even he was amazed.

From his house they were being picked up by another relative who turned up in a Juke - the boot took the two smallest cases. The rest had to fit between the passengers.

On a couple of occassions I have recently hired a car in the former Yugoslavia. I have been given a booted Polo, the boot is enormous.

Why they dont sell it in UK I'll never know.

In some markets there is a booted version of the kia ceed and hyundai i30

to top it, they are better looking vehicles, having nice 4 door coupe type lines.

Booted cars like that have never sold well in the UK which is why I expect they don't import it

I too have a mk2 jazz and is incredibly practical with a large boot capacity in respect to its overall length. The magic seat feature where the rear seat bases fold UP are very useful especially as the car is fairly tall in the interior.

Another good feature is that rear seat supports allow you to store stuff under them when they are in place.

My boot has a spare wheel in place but if you should only want the goo and compressor this would free up even more useful space under the floor.

My car is a CVT, and whilst it is not the sportiest of drives it is competent and very smooth if you are not in a terrible hurry. If only Honda could have offered a more sporty version that handled and had a more powerful engine it would be a very capable car indeed. Clearly Honda has the know all how to make an entertaining car I am just puzzled that they have not cashed in on such a good alround package.

Looking at the reviews, most if not all the 'small and boxy' cars with reasonable sized boots aren't exactly what you'd call nippy, at least compared to my 1.6 petrol Mazda3 - most, performance-wise are about a second or two slower to 60mph and average handling as well. Maybe I'm just asking for too much in a new car.

I did find that the latest Renault Megane was both quite roomy and quite up market looking too. The 1.2tce engine is a little quicker than mine, and was quite impressed with their efforts at improving the quality of the car, especially the interior. Not sure about the engine and other mechanical & electrical bits, given previous quality and reliability issues, including with those in their sister makes. Still - perhaps worth a look, especially as they can fit a reasonably priced full-sized spare wheel, though I haven't checked to see if doing so reduces the boot space.

skoda rapid / seat toledo - huge boot and good rear leg room, car looks longer than it is

The previous shape or current shape Nissan Note boot is not bad, the Honda Jazz old and new shape boot is bigger than the Notes.
