After being stood a while the diaphragm will probably have failed/rotted on the horrrible Ford Variable Venturi carb.
You also could have left the car with an air leak (inlet manifold gasket). If tickover improves/changes (briefly) when you squirt washing up liquid around the inlet manifold/engine joint then this is your problem. Check brake servo take off
The other probem could be the valve springs - some Escorts had different valve springs on inlet and exhaust valves . Get these mixed up and you may have problems. I'm not 100% sure if the CVH is like this but the last of the previous engines did have this problem as many moons ago I fixed this on a friends car. If I remember rightly a compression test won't show this up.
