Ford Focus MK2 2006 Petrol - Ford Focus consuming Engine Oil quickly - Enzo88

My car seems to be consuming Engine Oil (5w 30 Semi Synth) quite quick, I topped up exactly a month ago to the Max level. In 1 month it has come to the Min mark.

There are no obvious signs of a leak. I made sure I was on level ground when i checked on both occasions.

Is this amount of oil consumption normal on a 10 year old car (96k)?

My driving is mainly local (less than 10miles a day) 5-6 days a week.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Enzo

And how many miles did you do in the month. ?? Regards Peter

10 x 6 x 4. Approx 750mls from min to max, I think, on my Mk1. It's using far too much. Our 16yr old 115,000m 1.6 Zetec is using only about 1litre per 5000m. But I have carefully maintained it with oil and filter changes at least every 2yrs/ 12,000m so it should last a good while yet.

As long as it keeps going reliably, it'll be cheaper to keep topping it up with oil than to have some expensive work done to the engine. Engines do vary: maybe this one has had a harder life than your other car.

Have you noticed any blue smoke under hard acceleration or idling? Its good that you are using 5W30 semi syn, because these units are incredibly picky on the viscosity, chances are it may have been driven hard early in its life and on the wrong viscosity.

Converting John F's calculation to old units it seems do about 150 miles per pint, from memory of 60s and 70s cars I would certainly expect blue smoke. (unless it is leaking oil and the undertray is catching it so no oil patch on the drive. ) At that rate of usage even cheap semi-synth would be quite an item if you did more miles.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I'll check tomorrow for blue smoke when idle.

I'm considering using STP Oil treatment (£5.99) to see if that makes a difference. Halfords website says it 'reduces oil consumption'.

Scotty Kilmer on youtube suggests this symptom could be caused by a faulty PCV valve..but not sure if my Ford focus has one of these?

My other option is to call a well known vehicle breakdown company to try fix this and would only pay a £35 excess on a particular policy I have.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

So I checked and did not see any blue smoke. It was white. I might just call said breakdown company.

Thanks

Would an exhaust emissions test, reveal if oil is being burnt? & how much..
(A local garage charges £5 for one of these.)

Anygood to you...pics half way down
