As above, need to buy a new smaller car and not to sure on the colt vs the argo faimly, does any one have any experiences with these? From what i can tell the argo family from the car reliablity index has electrical and cooling and heating issues, but i have also read the clutch needs a bigger one and the brake discs go more frequently, these are easy fixes for the home mechanic. The colt on the other hand looks like the electrical, fuel system and suspension and axle seems to be quite high on repairs?

Regards jon

Only have experience of the Aygo, have delivered Colts but nothing otherwise...i would suggest both automated manual gearboxes are as unfit for purpose as all other automated manuals in cars.

Clutch in aygo is larger from about 2008, yes the discs do wear quite rapidly but our family owned one gets a lot of heavy town use, simple and cheap for home replacement.

Engine was rattly as others i've heard but i've recently put my own fully synthetic oil in and its far quieter now, time will tell.

No electrical issues at all so far, nor to be fair any others, it suffered from serious road noise but i effectively soundproofed it which has made a big difference, and the standard radio and speaker set up was awful, again easy to upgrade to a proper head unit and decent speakers.

Depends which Aygo family you are talking about. All were redesigned a couple of years ago.

Our mk1 Aygo was a great car to drive, but after 5 years and just 20,000 miles it leaked like a sieve and the electrics were failing. It had a new water pump, leaks fixed and a tailgate lock under warranty.

Get a Yaris instead. The French bits of the Aygo family let it down.

Sorry yes the ranges within 2005 to 2009 on both the colt and the aygo.

Definately tread carefully as these cars do keep their value so you could spend a fair whack on a lemon.

One check for water leaks around the rear lights is to remove the boot floor and take the spare wheel out. Any sign of rust on wheel or floor walk. They do provide a rubber bung in the boot so the water can be drained!

I forgot to add a colleague has just traded a 107 08 reg with 70,000 miles. She also had water pump replaced, the clutch was just going, but of more concern was the leak around the passenger door.

I'd agree with the above post about getting a Yaris instead, or an IQ maybe, and plump for the 1.3 engine unless you fancy the 1.8 Yaris which i would expect to be a cracking car and what we would have got SWMBO several years ago instead of the C2 VTS had we known it existed then.

My sister and her 2 companions all died in an Aygo when it hit a Ford Focus more or less head on. the focus driver survived. Still waiting for the inquest but I really do feel that this class of car is a death trap unless just for pottering around a town centre. They are just too small and don't offer much protection even for the backseat passenger.

Thats always been a problem for users of smaller vehicles.

pedestrian, bicycle, motorcycle, small car, large car, serious 4x4, small lorry, big lorry, 80 ton mobile crane, if you hit the next size up head on then the outlook is not good.

Brum, i'm so sorry to hear of that, condolences from us old chap.

Wow i'm sorry to have heard that also, made me think as every week i have to go and pick my daughter up.

All of the above with the rust etc, and the lemon, are you saying this is the same with the colt too? Seems like the colt might be a better bet?

Brum, so sorry to hear that. Deepest sympathy on behalf of all of us on here.

Chefslot - inevitably small cars need to be light, and therefore the occupants are more vulnerable. All cars have to pass the NCAP tests, but the star ratings have to take a car's size into account.

The Colt never sold all that well, and you may have trouble finding one. I'm not sure what you have in mind when you say 'smaller', but a Toyota Yaris 1.3, as suggested above, or a Ford Fiesta should be small enough for most people unless your driving is all in a town or city.

" All cars have to pass the NCAP tests, but the star ratings have to take a car's size into account."

No it is a voluntary system of testing - highlighted in 2014 when Audi falsely claimed their A5, A7, A8 and R8 models had been crash tested, and were found out.

Really, another scandal from the great vw group!!

Looking at insurance groups and saftey i have to say the yaris is the one to get then.

Cheers for all you help and fast responses. Shame the forum hasn't a like button.
