I picked up for 50p acopy of "Car Mechanics" dated April 1967.

120+ pages of fascinating stuff that took me back to my youth.

One thing I didn't know, it said that GM, Ford and Chrysler were offering 5 year/50,000 mile warranties on their cars in the USA provided they were serviced every 6,000 miles. Did that apply from 1967 to present day?

Lots of articles on engine tuning, ads for all kinds of parts and accessories.

A guide to used cars lists top speed, mpg, replacement cost of engines, (typically £50 to 70 for UK cars, but £540 for Mercedes!), gearboxes, tyres, brake parts etc.

I used to buy the magazine regularly in those days, running old cars it was often helpful.

Present day equivalent I suppose is "Practical Classics" and the valuable resource of this forum's technical section.

One of the best books from the 70's for the budding home mechanic was the AA Book of the Car, a huge volume and one that still has its place as a basic grounding in simple car mechanics.

ie brakes, for all the complication of modern brakes (much of its pointless such as EPB) its still basically hydraulics moving pistons pressing friction material against steel.

Would be an excellent book to have updated but still written in plain simple terms as the original.

GM's current warranty in the US is 3 years/36,000 miles "bumper-to-bumper" - with 5 years/60,000 miles waranty on the powertrain.

Have posted this before, but here's a wonderful Flickr stream with literally thousands of road tests from Autocar, Motor, Car Magazine, Motor Trend and others from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Be careful, it's a rabbit-hole that you can lose yourself in for DAYS :)

I have fond memories of the AA Book of the Car, including the section on body repairs. How they repaired the sills of a Mk2 Jag with scrunched up chicken wire and filler!

Thank you so much for this, Craig. Definitely one to add to 'favourites' and to dip into from time to time.

I used to buy car mechanics when I first started driving in 1980, I also used to buy popular motoring as well, I serviced and maintained my own cars, and these mags helped a great deal
