He better get down there and stamp his feet pretty hard. They should fix it. Suggest that they put another alternator on just to see if it is different.
But he should push - if it goes on too long it will get out of warranty, cause other damage or goodness knows what.

Engine is 1.9, non turbo. Is the accessory belt a possibility?

Before dad axed his 206 (1.4i 2000) it had a vibrating accessory belt tensioner.
The 1.9 is a proven engine used in many Pug and Cits, very reliable.

If it's a Y plater with average mileage, shouldn't there be another year's transferrable manufacturer/dealer warranty on it?
I agree with Mark though. If it 'sort of' works, that's not nearly the same as saying that it does work, so they should replace it. I take it the dealer in question is either a Peugeot franchise or you've taken it to one for the work to be done?
