Citroen C3 1.6HDi Diesel 2005 - Brake pedal clunks on startup - cit

I've noticed that on start up there is a clunk from the brake pedal, it physically moves once the key is released and engine starts normally. It can be quite loud sometimes and not at all at others.

It occurs intermittently and at first I though it was a ventilation flap slamming shut, it's that sort of noise.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Soon as you start up the vacuum pump does its job, presumably as with other modern cars (not needed on my old things..:-) you have to press the brake pedal to start the engine and you're feeling the vacuum assistance which usually causes the pedal to drop a little.

Pedal doesn't usually clunk though in my experience so might be worth getting someone to operate the pedal for you whislt you have a good poke nose round the pedal box inside, pedal hinges etc and under the bonnet the vaccum servo unit and brake master cyl, just to make sure there's nothing amiss....maybe it is indeed a ventilation flap or something, maybe try removing you're foot as soon as the engine catches to eliminate the brake assembly from the noise?

Thanks for your prompt reply Gordon. This car doesn't need the brake pedal depressed in order to start, just turn the key, old school.

It is dedfinitely not the ventilation flaps as I've witnessed the pedal move and clunk.

As you say it seems to be something connected to the servo as in my ignorance - I'm not a mechanic, I suppose there is no mechanical connection between the starter motor and the brakes apart from the servo pressure?

I will take it to be looked at but I fear I'm facing quizzical looks from the garage. Could it be a 'servo sensor' or servo valve or a leaking servo pipe? (clutching at straws here)

Doing this intermittently its probably losing vacuum over a period of a few hours, thats nothing to worry about, but might explain why it doesn't always perform for you.

Try pressing the brake pedal several times engine off to use up the vacuum, if it clunks then at least you will be able to demonstrate to the mechanic exactly whats happening, its probably nothing too alarming but i too would be checking it out.
