I would very much like to hear from anyone who has replaced the existing speakers to improve the sound quality. I wish to use the standard factory apertures as far as possible.

I should have mentioned that the car is 1999 SX model.

I have a 1998 model and have replaced the front speakers, which are a standard 5 1/4 inch size.

The rear speakers on my hatchback I believe are 4 inch and mounted in the C pillars, but I have left these alone

Carl,
What make of speakers did you use and how much of an improvement in the sound quality did you achieve? I find the standard speakers very dull sounding.

I used the Infinity Kappa range of speakers, and noticed a great improvement, the standard speakers are the cheapest Nissan can get away with !!

Mine is a GX spec with two way coaxial speakers in the doors, the only problem I had was that the replacement speakers were deeper then the originals, so I had to cut about the Nissan plastic rain shield that fits on the back of them.

SLX spec upwards had seperate tweeters in the A pillars which should sound even better, I was going to change the A pillar trim in my car to allow them to be fitted but never got round to it.

Another solution to a good sound is to get rid of the standard Nissan radio cassette and install something decent, I installed a Tuner/Minidisc heatunit with a CD autochanger in the boot.

As an ICE junkie I would recommend upgrades in the following order:
1 Upgrade the Head unit to a more powerful after market one try www.caraudiodirect.com. Blaupunkt,Alpines and JVC are nice.

Often it is the HU that is at fault any distortion is likely to originate here, the speakers just play the distortion.
After market Head units also have better radio reception, more power and improved playback of recorded media.

2 Replace the front speakers with upgraded Co-axials for convienience or Components (seperate tweeter) for sound quality.
These are the most important speakers in the car! Dont bother replacing the rears. Better speaker makes are Focal, Infinity, Magnat. Avoid Sony and Kenwood.

Thanks very much. Plenty of good pointers there. I'm not looking to shake the street, just quality sound!
