We am going to Spain again in a few weeks for a pre Christmas break. I intend to hire a car for a week. I usually leave it to others to sort out cars etc but this is the second occasion this year I have needed to hire abroad. I used to have an annual policy with Insureance4carhire but in recent years we have not needed it. I am looking for short term cover probably on a trip by trip basis and Insure4carhaire only offer annual policies. I would appreciate any guidance or recommendations as to where to look for decent cover. Cheers Concrete

Don't pay the hire company's charge for excess insurance.

You can get a better deal at:

Direct Car Excess Insurance.

They offer:

  • Up to £6,000 excess reimbursement for car hire
    in the UK and abroad
  • Damage to tyres, the windscreen and the undercarriage
  • Theft of secured baggage
  • Rental key replacement costs
  • Policyholder and all additional named drivers
    aged 21 to 85 covered

(I have no connection with the company)

No need for additional insurance if you hire through Autoreisen who operate in the Canaries.

Everything is covered and they don't take a deposit when booking.

Top company in the Which car hire comparison charts scoring 85% satisfaction.

Only downside they only operate in the Canarys as I found out when I had to book a hire car in Ibiza in the summer with one of the major companies through a UK broker only to find such a nightmare when returning the car.

The car was checked for damage with a special xenon light and when no damage was found they opened the drivers door and accused me of scuff marks on the sill which they said counts as a claim !!!!

I didn't notice that when I booked in Lanzarote, with Auto Reisen. Citroen C2 for a fortnight for €100! However I have two other rentals during the year so my annual policy will be useful. Who were the firm in Ibiza Stevieb, please? So I can avoid them if I go!

I can echo another poster's experience with Autoreisen in the Canaries - they are hassle-free and the fuel policy is that you leave the car with the same level of fuel as when you picked it up.

I do in fact have a policy with Insurance4carhire, but I've never had to claim on it.

On using brokers: having got a poor deal with one of these, I now keep well clear, as you never know which firm you're going to get, whether there's an office or even cars at the airport, when they're open, what the return procedure is, fuel arrangements etc., etc.

If I'm going somewhere new, I get on the TripAdvisor travel forum for the location and find out there - someone is always asking about car hire and you pretty soon find out which firms to go for and which to avoid.

I use quaestor car rental insurance. the price for 12 months is so reasonable its not worth wrrying about the cost.

I'm currently putting a claim through Insurance4carhire so it remains to be seen whether they will ratify my (genuine) claim.

We hired a car in Malaga and I decided to try the independant route for loss waiver insurance. Of course sods law that the car was pranged in a supermarket car park, so the (reputable) hire company had to bill me 300 euro for the damage, whereas if I had been slightly less of a tightwad I could have taken out their own insurance for about £50 more and walked away from it, no hassle. So it remains to be seen whether it was worth saving a few quid or not. So far there's been quite a lot of form filling and chasing around for damage reports, submitted the whole claim after much hassle but not heard anything back yet.

I had a really bad experience with Hertz in Ibiza especially withn their definitions of damage e.g a scuff on the sill !!!And a faulty tyre pressure sender!

Can anyone let me know of a reasonable company out thgere for my next trip. I used a UK broker for the booking with Hertz who couldn't do much to address the problem .

Did you try the TripAdvisor Ibiza forum?

Here's what they're saying: avoid First Rent a Car like the plague. Sixt gets some criticism, also Bravo. Goldcar mixed reviews, mostly bad.

Class Rent a Car almost universally recommended.

Why not ask the question there yourself?

Thank you all, rather belatedly thanks to BT 'improvement' works affecting the whole village broadband service for a few days. Recommendations noted and I will investigate.

On other matters, I have found Sixt to be good. All damage, even minor scratches are logged, and no Gestapo style checks at returns. I used to have annual cover with Insure4excess. It even returned my policy excess on a domestic claim on a policy at home. Form filling and much detail is required, but I would ask the same questions if I was paying out.

It would seem that car hire companies do have a poor reputation. Then again I have observed some awful behaviour by m****s with hire cars. The excuse given is usually 'well it's only hired, they can sort it out'. I suppose this has led to hire companies treating us all the same, i.e as m****s.
