Audi A1 1.4 TFSI S Line - How to tell what engine output VAG 1.4 TFSI. - bernie123

My daughter has just taken delivery of an Audi A1 1.4 S TFSI S Line on the NHS lease scheme and as I went out for a little test drive, I wondered how we could tell if the engine was a 150 BHP or the lesser 125 BHP.

Now, the 150 which she ordered has the cylinder on demand feature that closes down 2 cylinders under light load but I actually didn't feel that this happened at all.

It certainly seem nippy enough, but we wondered how we could tell for sure that she got delivered the 150 model.

Is there a way of identifying which engine the car has ?

FYI, the car was delivered to her work by a delivery driver.

Nice little car BTW.

Other than using the VIN (phone Audi to see which one it is) or some identifying mark on the engine cover (it may have something in the car's handbook saying if there are any visible/identifiable differences), you hopefully shouldn't notice whether it is or not unless you thrash it and see if (see HJ reviews page) it reachs 60 in 7.8 sec instead of 8.8 sec, though given its new, I wouldn't recommend that, at least until the engine is run in as per the manufacturer's instructions.

On HJ's car-by-car reviews, other than the price difference (~£800 list price), I could only see the difference being the mpg (hard to quanitfy) and the kerb weight (1080kg for the 125PS version, 1120 for the 150PS version). I have no idea whether the car's weight is somewhere on the car (next to the tyre pressure chart maybe?).

Its easy.

On the V5 its tells you the kW output. My 140PS Seat Leon is 103kw thus pro-rata a 125 PS will be 92kW and a 150 PS 110kW.

If you are still waiting for the V5 all VAG cars have a build sticker, its normally in the boot under the carpet. The kW will also be shown on that.

Simples.

Thought there must be something, otherwise people could be passing off higher spec models like they used to in the 1980s and 90s by buying extra letters to make an 'L' into a 'GL'.

I suppose having a Japanese car often makes life easy - not many model variants around like on the European makes!

Just remembered, the sticker in the boot is also replicated inside the service book.

If it has cylinder on demand, it should show a message on the dashboard when it goes into 2-cylinder mode.

On my A3, the message appears between the rev counter and speedo (except when one of the alternate display options e.g. digital speed is in use).

Apart from the message, it's very difficult to tell when it's running on only 2 cyclinders.

Thanks for the replies, I had forgotten about the build sticker, which should provide concrete proof of the engine output. I will have a look next time she visits.

We will also try to induce the switching to two cylinders on a longish cruisy road because if it did on my trial run, I certainly did not notice.

If it's like the A3 it should go onto 2 cyclinders whenever it's on a light throttle and on a reasonably level road.

I was quite surprised when I found how complicated the mechanism is. It doesn't just cut the fuel to the middle 2 cylinders, it also drags the cam lobes along the camshafts so the valves do not open.

Not much to go wrong there, then!

When i first bought my last xtrail a 2009 with a 173ps engine, it felt underpowered, i identified the engine by the pulley layout that only the 173 used, the 150ps engine is different.

I wasn't convinced i had the correct engine until then, no paper work sticker, label, or V5 would convince me, it wouldn't be the first time a car has been fitted with the wrong engine.

This reminds me of a holiday experience 30 odd years ago, at a campsite in Spain a Scotsman was waxing lyrical about his Ford Escort XR3i, it looked marvellous, white, spoiler etc etc, being a petrolhead I asked to see the engine, it was a 1.3 with single carb.... I tried to point out to him that he needed to speak to somebody because he had been conned, but he would have none of it, I wonder what he did when he got home?
