Renault Clio - Eldest daughter about to pass test (hopefully!) - lucklesspedestrian

Hi.

Eldest daughter is about to sit her driving test on Monday whilst we're in Spain. 2 questions:

1) The car is currently in our name but when she passes we will transfer ownership to her. If she passes is it just a case of her going on the DVLA website with the registration documents and recording that the car has been 'sold' to her and also completing our part recording the sale?

2) Next step will be for her to take out insurance in her own name (she's currently a named driver on our insurance policy) Given that the Clio is only worth about 2K does anyone think it's worth going fully comp or should we go with TPFT? She's 25 and will be mainly commuting in Edinburgh. Quotes seem to be around £700 for FC and £550 for TPFT

Finally any sage words of advice from the collective wisdom of this forum for a new driver would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

AFAIK you can do the change of registered keeper online.

The difference between TPFT and fully comp will be small with a low value car - I've known quotes where TPFT was more expensive than fully comp!

50 years ago when I passed my test, my father said "don't think you know it all, it's a constant learning exercise" - and he was right!

Leave the registered keeper as it is.

If you change it, then you'll get a refund of each whole remaining months VED and the daughter will have to pay VED from the beginning of the month she becomes the new keeper. Unless you're very canny you'll end up paying twice for the month in which it changes ownership.

If the V5 stays in the parent's name then I am not sure if its an issue for the daughter getting insurance in her own name when she's not the registered keeper? Also does the registered keeper (parent) face a problem in not having insurance on the car when its on the road ostensibly in their name? Not saying it is a problem but its worth checking out - or paying the month of duplicate tax for peace of mind? Finally insurance would need to be on the address where the car is routinely kept (not necessarily the V5 address which need only be where you are contactable I believe).

Are there not better ways to commute within Edinburgh?

If she is a student there a car will be a millstone round her neck.

Nope, student days are behind her and she's working now so can afford the car.

I know what you mean about commuting in a city but a car she wants so a car she shall have! (it knocks about half an hour of the each way commute anyway)

After she has passed her basic driving test get her to take a PassPlus course, may help her with all the stuff they don't teach for passing the basic test and could get her a discount on her insurance.

As an ex-native of Edinburgh I used to delight 10-15 years ago in the ease with which you could get about as there were lots of alternative routes both through the city and in the centre. You soon built up a local "knowledge" that kept you moving. Now on visits back I find more and more bus lanes and a very motorist unfriendly set of restrictions such as one way streets, no car roads, and the worst road humps I've ever seen. Having said that its still better to get around than most UK cities I've lived in or visited and I am sure the daughter will be zipping around (safely of course!) in no time. And public transport is very good too when you do leave the car at home.

Pass plus and quotes online

One of my daughetrs is just doing her test so we got a quote on line with all the correct boxes ticked but without pass plus.

We then went back and amended the quote by logging in so all the details remained the same except pass plus.

guess what ! it increased the quote by £50.00 not encouraging and may be a glitch in the system.

it was £626 fully comp 21 years old Citreon C1 but £ 676.00 if she held pass plus !!!!! Whats that all about.

so be carefull

"it was £626 fully comp 21 years old Citroen C1 but £ 676.00 if she held pass plus !!!!! What's that all about?"

It's about a computer being allowed to make decisions, which it should never be unless a human being is able to override it. Whichever company that is, I'd avoid it.

Leave the P plates at home or preferably don't buy them in the first place. Neither of my sons used them and I can't recall any of their friends using them either. The thinking goes that they provide a sense of false protection for the novice and mark you out for other drivers to take advantage.

Thanks for all the advice....she passed!

From an insurance point of view it worked out cheaper just to transfer ownership of the car directly to her rather than having her as the main driver on a car registered in our name.

I know what you mean about the P plate scenario Chris, even just driving the car sometimes myself, leaving the old L plates on I noticed very aggressive/stupid behaviour from drivers behind me.

Anyway, Bless, she found it.... ahem...'fun' to go and put petrol in the car all by herself yesterday for the first time.....didn't want to spoil her moment!
