Honda Civic 2001-2005 (52 plate) 1.4 petro manual - Gearbox/bearing problem - is she dead? - dean_wales

Hi everyone,

I desperately need help/advice with my Civic. I am broke and don't want to scrap a car that I might be able to keep going a little longer!

My cheap old 2003 Civic 1.4 petrol has 170K on the clock and has served me well. I would like to keep it on the road if possible for another year or so as we have two young kids and are properly broke!

My car currently sounds like this! Sorry for poor video...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN6HCqR0NG4

My local garage says its the 'gearbox bearing' that has gone and that it is uneconomical to repair. I want to find out if it is worth/possible for me to have a crack at it - the car drives well and has unfortunately just had anew MOT, tyres etc.

I would describe myself as an enthusiastic DIY type with a Haynes manual in hand! I do the full service, have changed most suspension and brake parts over the years, done the timing belt, electrical work etc. I have a decent set of tools but no dedicated garage/lift/workshop to do this in - I do it everything on street!

What do you guys reckon?

Dean.

Gearboxes are one of the most difficult things to repair without a proper workshop. I've done old motorcycles on the street, but I wouldn't try a car gearbox. How would you know which bearing, and what other problems might be in the 'box ?

The car's just got a year's MOT so it has a year left. I would check the gearbox oil level and continue using. I went to the trouble of repairing the transmission in an old Seat Ibiza, but it probably gave it just over 12 months extra - not worth it at all.

Just use it and check it over carefully - including driveshafts, mountings etc. Look out for a replacement before it breaks.

Guessing you mean a new used box?

don't see why not.

Thats if you have a good high lift jack,

NOT some piddly little Halfords thing or the like,

'cause the front of the car has to be lifted high enough to pull the box out once unbolted,

say two feet.

gearbox comes out from the bottom.

So good jack,

two accy stands and a helpful buddy when your putting it back in.

4 hours for a pro.

As above. Firtsly check the oil level, if there is plenty in there your gearbox could go on running for many more miles if it drives OK apart from the noise.

Depends how you calculate the 'economical' bit. If it would cost less to repair the box than to change the car for another, it is economical (for you personally). The usual way the decision is made is to compare the cost with the car's scrap value, which may give the wrong answer.

Find out how much a second hand gearbox is from scrapyard. Fit a new clutch kit as well (parts usually cheap) unless recently changed.

NEVER get underneath a car that is just raise on a jack - I once had to rescue someone nfrom under a car - not good - fortunately guy wasn't too badly injured. Secure on proper stands or on something solid. I use solid railway sleepers.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies - this forum really is ace!!

Rest assured I never work under the car unless its on axle stands. If I was to drop the box I think I would need to get a better jack but I have been considering it anyway.

It wasnt all that long ago (a year or so) that I chnaged the transmission fluid during a major service. I will check the level this weekend to be sure and top her up if low just in case that helps.

My main question is still the same though - what does it sound like is wrong with the car? I know the input shaft bearing is worn but I am convinced this bad clattering sound is something else.

I can get a bearing and seals from eBay for ~£40 but I dont want to do anything until I am pretty sure what the fault is.

By uneconomical I understood him to mean the cost of the repair is about the same as buying another 52 plate honda!

PS - Noise is a lot worse than it was now :-(

Thanks,

Dean.

By the way this is a great video guide to doing the bearing:

I would be happy to attempt it with that to fall back on. Such a shame that I feel there is something else wrong.

Which gears does this appear?

Hi there,

All gears really but you cant hear it in higher gears. It is most obvious in 1st and 2nd. I took a new video just now which shows the noise in 1st and 2nd.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiVbrTGwGnI

I just checked the transmission fluid level and it was low. Which is odd as I only chnaged it about a year ago. I managed to get somewhere between half and a whole litre more fluid in there. It hasnt made any difference though...

Any suggestions guys? I am on the verge of either giiving up and selling/scrapping her or going to a gearbox specialist for a quote. I am just not convinced that the noise is the input shaft bearing.

That's a strange noise - it sounds to me more like there is a chipped tooth, not just a bearing, the problem with transmissions is that when you get them apart there is usually more damage than just bearings. If a bearing has broken up the debris will have gone around in the lube and caused other damage, like the sound indicates.

If I were in your situation I would look for a good secondhand low mileage gearbox from a breakers.

I think you might have a fully collapsed bearing and the sound is gear teeth being pushed hard against one another instead of meshing correctly.

Not the worlds hardest job to change the gearbox, as said above invest some dosh in a sustantial trolley jack (the most important tool the regular home mechanic can buy), and get a friend to help you with the lifting in/out of the box, check the clutch too.

If the car is otherwise OK i would put the time in, good cars Civics of that model.

IMO under £100 buys a toy jack (unless you can find a good used pro jobbie) of dubious origin, you want something tyre bay size with a known name, it will last 25 years plus if you look after it so will pay for itself dozens of times over.
