Opel GT 2008 - Opel GT (2008) Car Insurance Question - gbJaMiDo

Hello,

Was after a second opinion. I have just imported an Opel GT 2008 Model. The import has gone well and I have all the docs, its got its UK number plate and is good to go.

I rang Admiral for insurance (as my main car is with them) just on the off chance they may be able to insure my before I went to Adrian Flux. They said they could, so I was quite pleased.

The could not find the Opel GT on their database and asked what the UK equivalent was, I said that there was not one really and stated that this was the model that came after the Vauxhall VX220, but was never released in the UK.

The operator then said, oh thats ok we have an Imported VX220 LHD on our system, its the same engine size, so we can insure it as that.

I said, ok are you sure, as that sounds a bit weird, as surely if the Police stop me and look at the Vehicle Registration Docs they will see OPEL GT and then my insurance will say VAUXHALL VX220, surely that isnt ok ?

The operator went away and checked with her underwriter, came back and said, if the police called us it would be fine, as we would tell them that the car is insured with us, with the license plate, as this in the UK.

I said, ok... Carried on with the quote details and the price was good. Before I comitted I asked for one more check that everything was ok with the above, again she went away and this time spoke with her manager and came back and said, honestly its all fine.

Now I guess I should not worry, but I am a bit. Has anyone else ever had this before ? -what do you think ?

Am I being paranoid ?

I would suggest that if the brand and type of car of the certificate (database) are different to the actual car you could expect a load of trouble should plod get involved or should you have an accident.

A specialist insurer will sort this problem out and you will have the correct car insurred.

Ask admiral to confirm in writing the phone conversation you had with them, especially you asking them several times that all would be ok and that you would be properly covered.

Just Googled 'Opel GT' - it looks quite nice!

Perhaps Admiral could make a note on its' system of your car's VIN number?

The Opel GT was a US-designed/built roadster, the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky using the US Kappa platform so not engineered for RHD, just like other US-GM models but re-badged as Opel for sale in mainland Europe.

GM claims to be a global manufacturer but in reality only Opel and Holden are capable of designing/building both LHD/RHD versions - and Holden closes next year!

I don't think you are being paranoid. Insurers can effectively do what they like unless everything is exactly standard bar anything you have told them about.

The onus is on you to tell them anything that could affect their risk. You have done your best, but they are judge and jury on this.

They have insured it as a VX220, on the implied premise that it is the Opel equivalent. Looking at it, it is nothing like a VX220. There must be many differences between your car and a VX220 that they can claim not to have been told.

Maybe it won't be a problem. Maybe it will. Admiral is not the most confidence-inspiring company I have ever dealt with.

The Opel GT is totally different to an Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220 - with no common parts - although the engine is an Ecotec it's a US-only version (normally) and not used in any other Opel/Vauxhall.

The VX220 used the Lotus Elise mid-engined aluminium chassis while the GT uses GM's US Kappa platform, which is front-engined steel.

Unfortunately you were dealing with a pen-pusher (or rather keyboard pusher) who was simply a slave to their computer. As you've realised, the risk is that if you were to make a claim, they'd use this as an excuse not to pay. ("We have no record of anyone telling you that it was similar to the VX 220....)

Try to find a broker who will in turn find an insurer who has the imagination to think beyond the database and enter this model manually.

Thank you all for your feedback. I've called them again and expressed my concerns and again they said that they "do this all the time" and that it comes up straight away on their system when they open they open my file that the car is an opel gt and not a vx220 and i've expressed concern on the phone multiple times to them however it will be fine... Ive asked for written confirmation of this as sugggested.

I will give it a go for a month with them (as its part of a multicar policy that is up for renewal in November) and it I get problem with Police pulls change it out to Adrian Flux.

Its not my main car, so I will not be on the road with it that often, but of course I take the feedback on board that it does not lessen the possibility of an accident.

Again, thankyou

I think the fact that it is on their database as an Opel GT not a VX220 would lessen my concern greatly; it's their decsion as to how they rate it and if they want to treat it as a VX220 from that point of view it shouldn't concern you in terms of whether or not you are covered.

You can have a look at what they have submitted to the insurance database yourself too...it gives the make and model.
