I have a 1 year old Fiesta with the 1.3 iron age engine which has covered 5,000 miles. The first thing I noticed when driving was a ticking / tapping noise at mid to high range revs. The decal on the rocker cover illustrates that the exhaust valve tappet clearance be set at 0.5mm, the handbook suggests 0.3mm.
Having adjusted the clearance to the lower level, rough idling and somtimes stalling at idle occurred, (this has been mentioned in an earlier thread)but the tapping noise was still apparent.I have now adjusted back to 0.5mm to get good idle speed and consulted the dealer under warranty. He had the car a day and agreed that there was a ticking noise but this was normal for "an overhead camshaft engine" - classic fob off!
Anyone else out there have the same problem? or is it just an iron age quirk?

Valve clearances need to be adjusted at every scheduled service (10K/1 Year) on your engine. Unfortunately it's due to the age of design. All these engines tend to have some degree of tappet noise. More frequent oil changes that is every 5K/6 Months will help to minimise wear and keep the noise to a minimum together with annual tappet adjustments.
By the way you need to correct your dealer; you have an 'overhead valve' engine.

These engines always sound tappety

They knock out camshafts and, in particular, cam followers. You want to hear one that's done 60,000 !

The courtesy cars that I've been driven in with this engine sound very rough after 5,000 miles. I'm afraid I would just live with it but make sure you do regular oil changes and adjustments every 10K.
If you look after it, the engine will still live to see 100K, I sold my last Fiesta 1.3 (N reg) with over 80K on it and it was fine.

I sold my last Fiesta with 157,000 miles on the old OHV engine(1100) and it was on original cam and was run on Ford 10W/30 in winter and 20W/50 in summer.

Thanks for the info chaps.
I'm a great believer in regular oil changes, so it looks like an extra decibel of Radio 2!
