volvi s60 T5 selling or keeping?? - michaloon

Hello dear friends, right. I have bit of dilemma. I proudly own s60 t5, which is in good shape. I was thinking of selling it for more economical car I.e. Honda civic. My budget is around 2.5k (I know, times are difficult). Volvo runs great, so comfy but thirsty for a 20mile daily commute.I had all the service done on Volvo but it looks like some suspension issues are creeping out. So my question is, is it better to sell or hold on and fix what's needed? Volvo does about 24mpg on my commute. I know I won't buy a lot for this sort of money. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

What suspension issues do you suspect are emerging? Have you had any MOT advisories about them?

You do around 4,500 miles commuting a year. At 24mpg that's 850 litres of fuel for the commute, which at current prices is £970.

If you got a smaller petrol hatchback, you might get an average 35mpg on your commute. That means 585 litres for commuting, which is £667.

So you'd only save £300 per year on fuel by changing cars - that's £25 per month. Then you get the uncertainty of what expenditure another used car might need to keep it on the road.

OK, you might save a bit on insurance and road tax (you should calculate the differences here too) but I doubt the differences will be huge.

At the £2500 level, ANY used car is a gamble. You may have years of trouble-free motoring, or it could be an absolute money-pit.

If it's drop links that need replacing, I wouldn't worry. It's a common weakness, and cheap enough at an indie. The problem is that you are using a main dealer who will pull your pants down for doing very little.

These cars will go on and on. They are designed to do massive mileages in comfort, and on those sort of runs the economy will be better.

You're not using a lot of fuel for the annual mileage that you are doing. On the other hand it's the sort of car that hasn't even got into it's stride on a 20 mile commute, so unless you intersperse this with some long runs, it seems a bit of a waste to me.

If you do change though, you will really miss those seats.

Guys, thanks for fantastic replies. Yes it looks like drop links and top strut mounts need replacing, everything else is spot on. It has only got about 90k on the clock. We go on the continent 2-3 times a year and it does great job. Thanks for convincing me, if something will break you will get the blame. All the best
