Volvo S60 2.4 Diesel reg 2011 (low mileage) - Dashboard Message " LOW BATTERY ! " - KenC

An elderly neighbour has a 4 year old Volvo S60 Diesel, due to illness the car is rarely used. I have been driving it weekly to try and keep the battery charged, however in recent weeks even after a 25 mile main road drive when I stop the car & switch off the ignition I notice the dashboard display message " LOW BATTERY !". I am starting to suspect the battery has been degraded ( meaning it no longer holds a full charge) due to lack of use/charge.

here is my question If I change the battery will I need a battery saver device to prevent the car ECU/Radio/ALARM etc losing their settings ?

note the original Volvo owners handbook describes how to change the battery and makes NO mention of taking precautions to protect the ECU/ALARM/RADIO settings. Can anyone offer any advice please ? thank you

Is it possible that the low battery warning refers to the battery in the remote key, rather than the main car battery?.If you do decide to replace the main car battery, then no special measures are needed.

Good Morning, thank you for your reply.

On my own vehicles I have changed several batterys, reset the radios/alarms etc no problem.

I am tempted to offer to change the battery on my neighbours car ( as a gesture of goodwill ) however I do not want to end up causing problems with his car eg the car will not start or the radio will lock itself

I note you say no special measures are needed ( for example no slave battery or battery saver to protect the ECU/alarm settings etc )

I am curious as to why this is ? do these modern Volvo cars have some type of internal memory saving feature ? or are the radios deemed "unstealable " because they are integral to the dashboard - hence no security code needed ?

thank you for your input which provides readers the confidence to carry out basic tasks and solve problems themselves.

Driving a car 25 miles once a week WILL NOT keep the battery charged. In fact if the battery is fairly discharged then you simply cannot fully charge it by driving alone. The battery needs to be charged with a charger and connected to a conditioner when parked up for any period.

Even a car in regular use should have its battery charged once a year on a charger. The AA put out an article about this about 2 years ago but I can't find the link now.

Agree with Cyd, the car needs linking to a smart conditioner charger whilst it's parked up, CTEK make good ones but those from LIdl/Aldi at 1/3rd the price, when available, do just as good a job and there are others, no need to disconnect the battery with most smart chargers (CTEK and Lidl/Aldi anway), indeed they can often be fitted semi permanently under the bonnet for ease of connection.

My old MB is now in semi retirement and i'm having to do the same with that, ocassional use isn't putting enough in, it's not the battery its new and the highest performance Varta silver i could get.

Thank you for your replies, for elekie & a/c doctor, I have checked the owners workshop manual ( downloaded a 392 page copy !) It states that the key fob has a seperate message when the key fob battery is "low ""Low battery in remote please change batteries"
