Ford S-Max 2.0 Diesel Zetec 2007 - Trouble starting diesel S-Max - keymoo

Over the last couple of weeks it takes me two or three tries to start my aging S-Max. I'm wondering what the problem might be. It turns over but then fails to fire. Usually on the 2nd and recently more commonly 3rd try it starts. I've noticed that if I leave the ignition at the same position for the pre-heat thing for five extra seconds after the pre-heat light goes off, it appears to help.

Any ideas what it might be and if I can fix myself and avoid an expensive garage visit?

I would suggest get the battery tested first.It may be that the engine is not cranking over fast enough.Diesel engines require a good cranking speed,otherwise they will not fire up.

Is the starter turning over as quickly as it was? If not, as sugested probably needs a new battery - or starter.
