I bought this estate car about a year ago. Wonderful, except always idled too fast. Otherwise perfect. Now, suddenly, the motor won't stop when switched off, but continues to run on raggedly. Help please anyone?

I think this uses the early DI engine with an injection pump, if so there is a fuel solonoid on the pump which can fail but it may be enclosed for security, if not it should be a relatively easy job to change.

A 1999 is IDI but solenoid advice still applies.

Great, except, remember my username....... dieseldummy.... I know what a fuel solenoid cut off valve is in principal, but, where do I find it and how do I repair it please. Also, are you able to shed any light on the idling too fast issue. It is definitely not related to external cable and "stop" adjustments. I disconnected the cable and after very carefully marking and measuring I let all external adjustments back to "zero" and it still wants to idle at just over 1000rpm??????

Get a Haynes manual-both are covered.

Easier said than done. I'd happily spend the money but I can't find one in this country. Any suggestions please.

Try your local library.

The solenoid is mounted on the injection pump, usually cylindrical like a spark plug, with one wire attached. It may be covered with a metal security shield which will have to be removed first.

Just unscrew it, you will probably find that the rubber plunger at the bottom has a split in it allowing a small amount of fuel past.

Now that's helpful, cheers. I'll let you know how I get on.

Further to the above, anyone any ideas about the too fast idle problem I also mentioned?

My ancient tech Berlingo uses a mechanical wax cold start device, and these are notrious for getting stuck on mine, I wonder if the same applies to yours.

Hmmm. I can picture the principle. Any ideas on how its actually implemented?

From memory on mine it's the only other cable on the fuel pump (Apart from the accelrator cable)

I just removed the cable from the pump and left it as is. I starts first time in winter and idles fine. I was going to change the wax 'stat but it's a ball-ache of a job.

Can't edit but to add:

On mine the stat ONLY affects the accelerator cable - it is no different from pressing gently on the pedal.

For cold starting the fuel pump itself adjusts the timing according to sensor data. Whereas on old diesels the cold start lever was used to do that.

Hopefully yours is a similar setup, and the wax stat (Or whatever yours has) does not affect the pump timing.
