Please advise me on the life xpectancy of a crankshaft in a vw Golf, purchased new less than 3 years ago. Warranty was for 3 years or less than 60000 miles. Car had completed 72000 miles hence out of warranty but been regularly services at VW and a reputable garage.

Please advise me if this is to be expected and thus just has to be tolerated with a £2000 bill or a fault that suggests the engine was not fit for purpose and can thus be challenged? (under supply of goods to consumer regulations)

Many thanks

Is it 'or' less than 60,000 or 'and' less than 60,000 ?

My reading of that wording would be that because you have had the car less than 3 years it is covered. Added to that benefit : if it was older than 3 years but had done less than 60,000 it should be covered. To be excluded would require the car to be BOTH over 3 years old and over 60,000 miles.

So if you are covered two ways by the use of 'or' it comes under the warrantly.

Hope this thought is reasonably clear.

The VAG warranty is 3 years or 60,000 miles. The warranty expires when the first limit is reached, in the case of the OP that was 60,000 miles.

I would be very surprised if VW would not contribute to repair or cover the failure. The only way to find out is to let a VW dealer appraise the car and determine the reason for the premature failure.

I think the biggest problem for the OP, as to how much, or even if, VW will contribute, will be the servicing. They have stated that servicing was carried out 'at VW and a reputable garage'.

That's not clear. Is it all VW main agent servicing ? Is it part VW, part indie servicing ?

been regularly services at VW and a reputable garage.

That may be enough for VW to refuse a "goodwill contribution" - much more likely to get a contribution if all the services had been at franchised dealer.

I'd be very surprised if VW didn't want to make a contribution as I would think that they would have more than a passing interest in the reason for the failure. To achieve this they would need to have the broken part so they could give it a forensic examination. They could only do this by the repair being carried out at a VW agency so it is in their interest to offer you an inducement to do this as we all know main dealers are the most expensive on the planet. It may be worth your while contacting VW direct and offering this deal, however if they don't want to play ball and then ask if they can have the broken part back for examination tell them to take a hike.

Thanks Skidpan. I now comprehend the wording. Does it specifically say whichever comes sooner ? Although I appreciate this is accepted practice, I still think my reading is possible, i.e for as long as three years, but if it takes longer to do 60,000 miles it lasts till then, but not worth any further thought. I was wrong.

VW's own website has the details in full. The terminology used is clear :

www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/plans-and-policies/fac...s

This warranty will terminate on the anniversary of the third year from the date of original registration or at 60,000 miles, whichever is soonest.

For a crankshaft to fail would be a little unusual, wouldn't it? Bearings, yes, but the crank alone? Cause possibly be due to failure in manufacture if indeed it is solely the crankshaft. Not sure we have the full picture, and perhaps the OP could clarify what he has been told.

One other thing : the OP states that this is a 1.9 litre golf, and it's 3 years old. The Golf Mk 6 (2009-2013) was never produced in a 1.9 litre engine, as far as I'm aware. Though I'd be happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Our recently acquired Micra is a 2007 car with 23,000 miles on the clock. When new it had a 3 year or 60,000 mile warranty. If your interpretation was correct the car would still be under warranty since it done less than 60,000 miles.

If only that were true.

Every manufacturers warranty specifies the max distance and max time and states clearly that its the first reached that applies.

Just done a bit of research. The 1.9 TDI was dropped in 2008 when the Golf Mk 5 was still in production. No doubt a few could have been sold in 2009 but its difficult to believe that one remained unsold until 2011, 2 years into Golf Mk 6 sales.

Well and truly corrected. Many thanks again Skidpan.
