mini cooper s r53 - cam tensioner removal - Gavinh1

i have bought a new bmw mini r53 cam tensioner and thought all was going well when replacing, but as i undone tensioner nut to expose the tensioner only the plastic cap end of the tensioner came out leaving the metal section still in. Ive tried many times pushing the cap back on and pulling out the whole lot but the plastic cap just keeps disconecting from the tensioner before budging. Any advise please guys . thanks
