If I only drove 4,000 miles a year..and wanted a big comfortable 4x4, the difference in fuel costs of 20 mpg (petrol) and 30 mpg (diesel)..is at most £400 a year. There will also be a VED penalty of around £200 a year.
So total annual cost penalty of £600 on a car costing £50k plus to buy new.
Chicken feed in the scale of things.
Offset that with greater quiet,, lower risk of fouling DPF etc and more power.. and your choice is obvious.
Of course, if £600 a year matters to you, don't buy a 4x4: A set of new tyres will cost you over £1,000 on some models..As for servicing costs..
I'd buy a Porsche Cayenne...handling and power...
Pity my garage is too small.
