There is something clearly not right with the steering / front end of my Ford Fiesta Mk5. The front steering is so sensitive, that anything like cats eyes, cracks, or imperfections in the road make my steering wheel twitch all over the place. I’ve been told that it’s me who’s being oversensitive, it’s a Ford Fiesta, they all do it, which I know is complete bull. You even get slight twitches when breaking sharply at low speeds, which isn’t right.

Cars that I’ve owned in the past ride this sort of stuff out, but to me, it seems as if the from end is either to light, or there’s too much give in something allowing the road to manipulate the steering. My mechanic has checked everything and says it all seems pretty much in order and tight.

However, we’re going through a process of illumination right now, which is driving me nuts, as the problems still persists and is becoming rather expensive!!

So far, we’ve addressed the following;

1) New shocks, disk, pads

2) Tracking, balancing

3) New front tyres, tyre pressure (car has alloys)

I’ve posted on a few forums to date, with very little luck, but no one seems to know what is causing the problem. Any help or advice at this stage would be grateful.

Thanks in advance.

The symptoms you are describing would occur if the front wheels were towing out too much, as one wheel encounters a seurface with less grip, the wheel with the best grip pulls the car out of line for the duration, till you correct that naturally, and then when the grips again equalise you have to snatch it back....that sound right?

Other possibles are caster might be out, but we're into specialist measuring here and should only be out if the car has been damaged in some way, but its probably one side and to produce the effects you describe might well be measurable witha tape measure, so check each side yourself, wheelbase too (front wheel centre to rear wheel centre)...does the car steer straight ahead if you let go of the wheel or does it pull to one side, thats a clue.

Don't forget the rear can have more effect than some think, so that alignment needs checking too, presumably all suspension bushes and joints have been checked carefully thorughout the whole car.

Also it can be interesting to get an assistant to drive your car on quiet roads and you follow in another car and watch how it behaves, paying particular attention to how the wheels and suspension operate over undulations, also look for crabbing (car going down the road slightly sideways, indicating the rear axle is out of true..

Try swapping front and rear wheels, and whilst you have the rear wheels up, spin the wheels and check for buckled wheels or distorted tyres.

I'll ask a question. What size wheels and tyres are fitted ?

These symptoms are also quite common with big wheels/low profile tyres.

Good point that Rob.

edit....arrgh, my glaring error which now glows like a neon sign with big finger pointing at it...toeing, not towing, schoolboy error...head hung in shame..:-).

We put that down to autocorrect GB, you should have kept quiet.

Tanfies - has it always been like this, or has it developed?

Are the wheels standard, not aftermarket wheels or off another model with a different offset? If they are sticking out of the arches there's the problem:)

Assuming that's not the case and it has developed over time, a full four wheel alignment check would help eliminate some of GB's possibilities.

I'd have your mechanic look at the rear bushes etc first if not already checked.

Hi guy’s, to answer your questions, it has always been like this. When I bought the car, the shocks, discs, pads were all knackered, so these had to be replaced, both front and back. I bought the car with low mileage, but it hadn’t moved much, hence the problems.

My mechanic who is trusted, also had the tracking and balancing done, but this didn’t resolve the problem either. He even swapped the front and back tires around, but still, this did absolutely nothing. As a last resort, we bought 2 new front tires, just in case the walls had gone or something, but again, his didn’t make the slightest bit of difference.

However, when doing work on my car, my mechanic did say it looked like it’d had been in one at the front, and possibly down one side, but it was nothing major. Said the car has possibly had a new wing and front bumper. He had his tape measure out like mentioned above, and checked all the geometry, which was spot on.

As far as I know, the steering mechanism, bushes etc, have also been checked, but it has standard alloys (see here) with 195 / 50 R15 tyres.

Thanks for answering regarding the wheels : you'd be amazed at the number of people who complain that their steering/handling has gone to hell, only to (eventually) reveal that they've fitted monster bling alloys shod with rubber bands. However, we can rule out the wheel size in this case now.

As you seem to have had all the wheel alignment/suspension checks done, the only real thing I can think of to check would be the steering. If the car has been in a crash on the front end, then rack parts, rods, etc could be bent.
