Honda Civic CDTI 1.7 (54 plate) - Repair costs - civicduty

I have had this car for 8 years and 125k on the clock. Has been reasonably reiliable but now problems really starting..... the barrle of the driver side lock has gone - I have yet to be quoted for the cost - told it is not expensive - anyone know?

The clutch has started to slip - I think..... it will sometimes over rev when accelerating but it is not bad - yet. It does not slip at slow speeds/starting off etc... so could it be something else? If it is a clutch Honda have quoted £700 plus to provide and fit..... surely I can get it cheaper?

Also with 125k on the clock the cambelt is the original - is it an emergency replace exercise now? I think they are supposed to last for 90k or 10 years..... so it might be a problem? Told this is not expensive - anyone have any ideas?

I know this is a silly question, but is it time to dump this car - btw I don't have a load of money waiting to buy a new one!

I would find a good indy to do the work which will just about halve the costs. Cam belt should be done 10years and 90k do do it asap. Sounds like the clutch has gone, you could get a honda one or 3 party from the likes of LUK who supply many OEM clutchs. Door issue is maybe most painful if you want all the keys to match. I would say £700 all in from a good indy and avoid the likes of MR Clutch.

Agreed : cambelt, you are gambling. If it fails, the car is scrap. Must be done ASAP. Independent garage. First though, check what else should be done at the same time (some cars, the pulleys, rollers, even the waterpump). These might be included in the price, or might be extra. But not doing them is the ultimate in false economy

Clutch : independent garage. You shouldn't need a main agent to do it.

The lock ... that's the difficult one. You might be able to get the barrel fixed, but I really don't know.

One last thing : I know myself (and the other reply) have said to use an independent, but it might be worthwhile asking a main agent to quote for the job. Sometimes, they can be surprisingly cheap.

Agree with above, don't leave the cambelt, or the clutch any longer, if it scores the flywheel that will be added expense.

Is the door lock seized, have you tried some lubricant, not WD40.

If you sell the car as is, as against scrapping, it will probably feature on another forum i use as a superb little car bought for scrap money and put back to good working order for peanuts.

None of the work is specialist, all easily done by a competent mechanic, relatively easy DIY too, i agree with avoiding fast fit joints.

Not maintaining a car is not money saving.

Surprised the Honda lovers haven't been on yet telling you that Honda's never go worng and if they do Honda will repair them totally FOC even after the warranty has long expired.

But I guess this proves that they only go on threads where other brands have issues and try and rub in the fact that Hondas are far superior.

As for your car it will cost a few £'s to sort but that will be way less than buying another motor and suffering depreciation and the risk of buying a lemon.

IMHO if its in reasonably good condition get the faults sorted and keep running it.

At 129k it seems the only "fault" on this honda is the door lock. The cambelt change is overdue and the clutch is slipping, which I would say has done fairly well for the age and mileage.

Well yes they do go wrong, and think Ford Owners are the worst for that way of thinking!

No they don`t

Agreed

I agree with that, and it may go on for another 125K or more

It's true - Hondas don't go wrong! The 1.7 CDTI engine is an Isuzu lump-not made by Honda.

I had one and ran it for a year or two - not bad, a bit crude and lumpy, engine mounts were suspect and started making cambelt tensioner noise when cold so chopped it in for a 2.2 ctdi civic, which I've still got.
