Chevrolet Cruze - Happy about fuel consumption and tyres - oldroverboy.

Just checked up on fuel usage, (brim to brim) 40 and a bit t0 the gallon, not complaining about that at all, was round trip taunton to rickmansworth via a303/m3/m25 back via a412/datchet/windsor m3/a303 daytime both ways.

All things considered quite pleased with that, and those rotalla tyres i fitted 7 months ago doing well, no signs of wear and much quieter than the nexen n-blue fitted previously.

car has done 40, 000 miles now, and having not found the "comfy car" I want, will soldier on.

After all, it was paId for at purchase and running costs have been minimal.

I had a set of Nexens fitted to the Nissan Note, they are awful compared to the previous continentals.

Louder, have lost 2mpg, grip better in dry but worse in the wet.

I know kia and Hyundai fit Nexen to their cars, are they a south Korean brand?

They are.

And from general gut-impressions gleaned from recent bouts of wading through online tyre price lists and reviews, I'm surprised that Rotalla are being found better than Nexens, especially for road noise.

Just goes to show, er, something. ( ?? )

Always the way with reviews, Some people will always slate cheaper brands.

Over the life of a tyre the small cost diffence between cheapo and quality tyres is very little. I got Continentals for just £5 a tyre more than an unknown cheapo brand.

I had Nexens on my Toyota and found them to be better than the aging pirelli's that it had on it before.

I guess comparisons will change from tyre to tyre but the Nexens I fitted to my C5 were far better in the wet than the hideously expensive "premium" Michelin Energies they replaced, they were quieter and rode better too - I suspect the longevity of the Michelins would be better - but then the lack of wet grip shows they were probably made of concrete. Nexens are indeed South Korean and along with Kumho are keenly priced (but not budget) tyres that are competitive against premium brands in terms of performance.

I replaced the Pirelli p6000s on my XJ8 with Kumhos which were better in every respect (including tyre life) and half the price (then.)

When the Contis on my 207 SW diesel needed replacing I fitted Avons. Fuel consumption rose (fewer mpg) for a while, now seems to have settled back to about the same 62 overall figure. I guess brand new tyres with max tread have slightly more rolling resistance?

. I guess brand new tyres with max tread have slightly more rolling resistance?

Indeed, you'd expect more tread squirm which increases fuel consumption. This is why "energy" tyres often have such hard compounds to reduce it. Another trick is to have shallower tread depths in the first place - meaning you're effectively paying a premium for a quarter-worn tyre!
