Hi, I have lost the keys to the petrol locking cap on my Escort, I have tried using a small fine srew driver but that was useless, can anyone please advise what to do. I thought I would be able to find a replacement on e-bay but the ones they have for sale are black but I would prefare the original chrome.

Just a thought: in a few days time when the tank is almost empty and you need more fuel to get to work each day, do you really think you'lll care if the key is black or chrome??

Get someone to drill out the lock,it is only soft metal,then fit a new cap,whatever the colour.A chrome one might add a shilling to the value of the car.

Sorry if I didn't explain properly, yes I have lost the keys to the petrol cap but it was the REMOVAL of the petrol cap I was asking about and yes I would PREFARE another chrome one but of course I wont be too fussy if I can't find one. The tank is almost empty but thankfully I don't use it for work as I'm retired.

As this is my first time on this site I'm just wondering why the last line of my question is in BOLD as I didn't type it that way, it makes it look as if that was the issue and it's not

A good sharp 1/4" or so bladed screwdriver hammered straight into the lock usually does the trick, those who remove fuel @ 3am don't muck about with finesse and they seem to have little trouble removing the things, don't need to puncture the tank on an Escort, dead easy to siphon.

If you can't find another chromed locking cap, maybe get the black one and colour code it to the car, its probably meant to be painted over anyway, black wasn't the colour the proletariat were encouraged to buy in Escort days..;)

Having removed the cap as above,remove the lock assembly from the old cap and fit the lock assembly out of the new cap to the old!About a five minute job.

A big thank you to all the replies I have had, it's almost a week now since losing the petrol cap keys so best get on and do what has to be done....DRILL!!!

When I owned a Mark 2 Escort many years ago, and still lived in London, I had all my petrol stolen out of that car on two separate occasions. They didn't bother with the locking petrol cap, they just cut the pipes coming out of the tank!

You still have a Mk 2 Escort, not seen one for years. Sold mine in the early 80's despite looking after it the rust bug had bitten it really bad.

Have very fond memories of it (other than the rust), would love to have one as a weekend car.

Hi Thunderbird, yes my Escort mk2 is a 1978 Ghia and Iv'e had this one for 15years, it was in v.g.condition when I bought it. therefore have managed to keep on top of it with the help of 2 reliable, honest and dedicated mechanics, a rarity these days, and yes Iv'e had the rust buckets too as I have had a passion for Escort's since passing my test in 1982 but this one has been the best.
