Mercedes E220 SE CDi Auto - Auto gear box noise - PTE

Our car is less than 4 years old and we have had since new (Sept 2010). It has done 40,000 miles and serviced by Mercedes. Recently we have noticed an intermittent high pitched whine coming from what seems to be the auto gear box. It is present whether the gear box is in park, drive or any of the others. The noise comes and goes and so is proving difficult to pin down. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be? I am undecided whether to part ex it for a new car but if the box is on the way out then that will influence my decision but I would be surprised if it was as its not old and not done that many miles. Any thoughts much appreciated.

If it was mine i'd run it into one of the very good MB indies for an expert's opinion, its due a transmission oil change now so you kill two birds with one stone.

A look on one of the two very good MB owners forums will locate you a recommended indy in minutes.

" its due a transmission oil change now so you kill two birds with one stone."

I would prefix this " in my opinion" but there is no recomendation in any service bulletin to change the gearbox oil.MB service cars that have done upto 1million kms without changing the gearbox oil.

ok thanks for the replies. I called Mercedes and they tell me the gearbox oil needs changing every three years, although they did not do this on it last service at 3 years. They cannot explain why, typical Mercedes dealer service. I just hope that the noise isnt indicative of a problem caused by that, probably not I suspect. Just need to either spend £250 getting a transmission oil change at MB dealer or £150+ at an independent.

3 year oil change? there's nothing in the service bulletins to suggest that and MB boxes last a million km's, daylight robbery i tell ya

I suggest you read a service chart on this particular car before you comment .

As Gordonbennet says, first thing to usually do with an MB box when you have a whine etc, is to get the fluid level checked/changed. It is critical that the correct grade of fluid (meeting the MB spec) is used, plus there's a set procedure to follow for checking the fluid level, so best to take it to a garage who know about Mercedes.

OP doesn't state if this is the older 5G or 7G box. MB changed the guidelines on the 5G boxes from 'sealed-for-life' to change once at 37,000miles. Many MB indys (and main dealers) recommend to carry on changing the fluid (plus filter) at approx 37K intervals - I certainly stick with this. If it is the newer 7G box, not sure what the guidelines on that are.

Which ever gearbox it is, get it checked out sooner rather than later!
