potter around in a taxi (pay for a college project).... I don't particularly smell anything.... but after a while, after a few days.... something seems to add up
* tight chest
* slightly burning throat n nose
* a fatigue (not mixed up as any tiredness)
* light headed once or twice
.... often stop driving, to freshen up (feel what seems to be a fine fine fine coating of greasy nature over skin and clothes.

All the above are extremely subtle

MY QUESTION:
Q = How to test the air inside of a car?... I would like a "measurement" of my personal space air, made.

Been in garage to check exhaust and engine systems.... no evident leaks

appreciate ideas / experiences, thanks

The most likely sources would be exhaust gas or anti-freeze. Both have quite a distinctive smell though.

Exhaust gas could be getting back through a poor tailgate seal & anti-freeze could be escaping from the heater matrix.

Try putting a thin smear of petroleum jelly on the tailgate seal & see if it transfers to the opposite surface when closed. Try running the car without the heater on before it gets too cold.

Most of these fumes probably come from the taxis in front of you on the rank!!

vauxhal vectra 1.9 TDCi 05 estate - dying from "possible" diesel fumes inside car ???? - stephenn

Thanks for thoughts and ideas.....

Air con = off... so think can cross that out
No water leaks or top ups needed, under bonnet... so think can cross out antifreeze.

leaves the seals as a good area to look at.... there is (what I think) a wierd design with this car.... in that the exhaust tail pipe ends around a foot short of the back of the car.... but apparently it is correct exhaust and vauxhals design for 05 estate?... could be a contributing factor in itself.

Getting a wiff of the taxi - car- bus in front is fairly common place.... but this situation occurs in car, in it's own space.... more a slow build/effect

My desire..... is this..... to somehow find a gadget or selection of gadgets or test paper (personal badge type thing).... that will detect and reveal the "air quality".... what the #### I'm actually breathing

I'd love to go to Halfords an get something that hangs on the rear-view mirror.... and turns black if the air is fumey... sort of thing

I'll continue search.. cheers all

Has it had a new exhaust fitted at some point?;most fast fit places fit a saloon exhaust to an estate and swear blind it's correct-they should fit an extension piece..The fumes that will kill you are Carbon Monoxide(CO) and you'll get a sensor at B&Q or similar.

not a new exhaust.... I had this a year.... the exhaust was on it... noticed last winter when looking for leeks last winter.... but it is supposed to be the OK design.... (had a look at others (same model year estate & all the same)

understand your thinking on saloon fit.... that was immediate thought when first seen.

The CO gadget has been discovered (although diesel has low CO content.... but is on its way.... so can measure that soon (thanks for thought)
Apparently HO2 is in diesel fumes.... and I've just found paper badges that turn yellow if present.... from usa.... looking to find them in UK ideally, but may send off.

Might seek the exhaust extension.... and If I find the short design is the cause of my discomfort an diminishing driving hours.... I could find and use it on the designer... to shove it where the sun don't shine 8)
cheers for now

HO2? Never heard of that. Do you mean NO2?

I think the obvious answer here is a pair of massive big-rig style stacks.

Go on, you know it makes sense.

Have you tried taking a canary with you?

vauxhal vectra 1.9 TDCi 05 estate - dying from "possible" diesel fumes inside car ???? - stephenn

thanks for typo pointer..... indeed should have been NO2 Nitrogen Dioxide.

I'm loving the canary idea.... if it dies (before me).... then perhaps i'll go for the twin smoke stacks.

I guess that (the canary) leads back to me searching foran "air quality detector".... some sort of modern air quality / toxin measuring kit / gadget / chemical test badge.... type of thing.

search goes on.
cheers for now

Hi,

I realised that this thread is old, but I have the exact same problem with my VW Transporter and am at my wits end trying to find what's causing it.

Did you ever find any way to test?

And/or get to the root of the problem?

How old is the Transporter? Original ones with the air cooled engine drew warm air for the heater from around the exhaust system, with the obvious possibility of fumes being fed into the cabin.

Think the original poster may have succumbed to the fumes...:)
