Sony Laptop & Wi-Fi - Peter

My DiL owns a Sony Vario laptop but she has a problem with it and the wi-fi in her house.

In all other locations we've tried, the laptop will connect to the relevant local wi-fi signal and she can then go onto the internet but at her place, the laptop always connects to the wi-fi, (router supplied by Sky), this all shows up in the laptop but we cannot get onto the internet. All we get are Local Access Only notices, Explorer comes back with a non connect message.

I am reluctant to go into the various options to alter things in case I muck it up all together.

Anyone got any ideas.

Many thanks in advance.

Try connecting with an ethernet cable.

If this gives you internet access it is a wireless problem

If it does not connect with the cable either it is likely to be the hub.

Disconnect/re-boot and see what happens.

To me it sounds like SKY (or whoever) haven't 'switched on' the broadand, hence the router can't connect because the exchange won't allow it to.

Falkirk and Simon are both correct. Try the cable and if it works you know you have b/band and a faulty router. If it doesn't work you don't have b/band or a faulty modem. I was once sent a router by BT that did not have wireless capability and would only work with an ethernet cable, so read the paperwork that came with the router. Of course the usual switching off and re-booting sometime works but also check that you have synchronised your laptop to the router via the security password. Best of luck. Let us know how you get on. Cheers Concrete

maybe call sony?

In the end, the DiL wired the laptop straight into the router and that is where it will be for some time to come.

Many thanks for all the advice offered.
