Nissan Leaf - New Nissan Leaf for £18K - A Great deal - Leafspring

Who says electric cars are expensive? I just bought a Nissan Leaf from West Way Nissan in Southampton for £18212 including metallic paint. That's a 23% discount on the list price even after the Govt grant of £5000. Details are here:

www.westwaynissan.co.uk/

Basically its a 2 year PCP deal with restricted mileage (5000miles/year so will not suit everyone), £2783 dealer deposit contribution, £125/month at 6.9% APR and a £14001 balloon payment. There are no fees so you can buy the car after a few months outright without paying a penalty. Offer runs to the 31st March.

I may go the full 2 year term on this deal as I want to see how EV battery technology improves - don't want to be left with old technology!

I think this deal is partly due to Nissan clearing 2012 Japanese imported stock prior to starting production in Sunderland in a few months time. Leaf sales in the last Quater of 2012 were not good by all accounts.

The Leaf is a great car hampered by a high price so it is good to see Nissan trying to boost sales. The more people see the Leaf the more it will be accepted.

Just think - No more visits to petrol stations - EVER! I've also got solar panels on my roof so I recharge the car for FREE.

Nothing is free in this world ,I suppose your solar panals were free and they have a 100% pay back and what you think is a good deal on your leaf is not so good as somebody is making a very large profit.Actauly you are paying a lot more for transport than most people who are running much more acceptable and usable vehicles.

I understand your exitment in getting a new car but I suggest you do your home work a little bit more thoroughly.

LOL.

Oh Collos, way to put a dampener on things! You've heard the phrase "each to his own"

Sounds like a good deal to me. At 23% discount, I doubt that Nissan or the dealer are making too much profit.

Maybe you could give us updates on how it's going from time to time. I, for one, would be interested in how it performs in the real world and whether "range anxiety" becomes an issue!

Electric cars are not for everybody - I'm not preaching. But some people like me are interested in electric cars. However, like me, they are put off by the price premium you have to pay for them and uncertain about residual values/ battery life etc. So I thought I would highlight this deal as it is was good enough for me to change my mind and buy a Leaf. So, despite your sceptism, it may suit other people too.

By the way I paid for my solar panels myself and I get paid £700 a year feed-in-tariff index linked for 20 years - another no brainer deal. I'm also free to use the the power I generate so I can charge my Leaf near enough for free. It is like having your own oil well and refinery!

So you didn't pay for your solar panels. Everyone else did :)

There is not a solar panal made that will keep its efficiency for more than 8 years, I should read your contract carefully. If you think the Leaf is good value at 18k plus 6.9% interest you are easily pleased.

Have a look at the "Which" site for the lowdown on solar panals. If you do all the calculations for domestic systems then they actually will never have a true payback even if you use the latest crystal mix of contruction even these are only around 17% efficient and in a real world around 12%.If you had done your homework fully then a better return would probably have been through ISAs.

Very perceptive and quite true. But life is like that - "I don't have kids but I have to pay taxes towards schools" etc, etc................

20year life on solar panels on a 2 year old PCP?

The solar panels are not on the car though....!

But kids have a "common good" weighting. People that don't have kids benefit from the fact that is a younger generation to take over when they retire-otherwise retirement wouldn't be an option.

Solar panels are just over-priced intermittent electricity. Subsidy for nothing.

It seems to be a keen price, if you look at HJ's review. Obviously it depends what you are going to use it for. 2 adults + 2 kids + luggage to Devon from Birmingham for a holiday isn't going to work is it?

" Limited range of 100 miles means it cannot fully replace a petrol, diesel or hybrid family car, limited supply and at £25,990 not cheap.".

When they drove one round Berlin centre for an advertising stunt(not Nissan Renault) it stopped in less then 65kms.They forgot you have to keep the heating on even though the car is stood in traffic, the manufacturers might say it does 100mls but would you want to be 50mls from home in one once the battery is flat you cannot call the nice AA man or buy a can of electricity.Having driven one on a short test in Dresden it reminded me of a milk float I used to drive as a kid although not as versatile.

Going back to the solar panals one assumes the very small amount the average domestic system generates one would assume that nearly all this and properly more is used in running the house so you either pay for the car regen or pay for the power used in the house.

It's an attractive proposition, almost free running, nearly silent, no more subsidy to half the world paying for oil, it's ideal for a city dweller who does a lot of short journeys from home.

With a 40 mile commute each way, which I now do by train because it is so much cheaper than driving on paper this would be ideal for me too. Of course I will have lights / heating / aircon / radio on all the time so just how much will this eat into the range .. the thought of running out of power 5 miles from home makes this a no no. This is before I plan that 150 + mile day trip to London to visit family ... just imagine running dry at the top of the Dartford bridge!!!

Or caught in one of the many few hour traffic hold ups on a very cold or very hot day.I suppose if you were stopped on the Dartford crossing you could always jump in the Thames if it was a hot day.

The Nissan Leaf includes RAC recovery if you run the battery flat in the first 2 years of ownership. You would have to be pretty dim to do this (Clarkson et al?) as you have estimated range and battery charge info displayed right in front of you. There is also the satnav that will tell you where the nearest charger is - in particular the quick chargers (high voltage DC charger). These are at all Nissan dealerships and will be at most motorway services by the end of this year - and they are free (for now). Quick charge from flat to 80% charge (60-70 miles worth) takes 30 minutes but because you would plan your journey the battery would not be flat so it would take less than this - time for a coffee.

It is an education process - I'm not normally an early user of new tech but this really appeals to me and the PCP deal lets you try it without risking lots of cash. The used market has yet to develop properly - used values are all over the place - Nissan will have to address this eventually by extending the warranty. The USA/Canada get 8 an year warranty on their battery and motor whilst Europe only get 5 years.

Just as a matter of interest my annual mileage is only abour 4000 as I work half the year in the offshore oil industry - how ironic is that!

Not ironic at all - a great deal of precious oil is used in the manufacture of solar panels and lithium batteries - electric cars just aren't as green as politicians would have us believe.

>> restricted mileage (5000miles/year so will not suit everyone),

With the range of those things between interminable charging cycles, you'd probably be pushed to do more than that anyway.

>> I've also got solar panels on my roof so I recharge the car for FREE.

As long as you're at home to charge it during the day of course. Most people have jobs to go to.

Give the OP a break. In years to come we will all be driving electric cars but before they get accepted as an viable alternative to petrol/diesel and before I buy one a lot of development work needs doing. The OP and others like him are paying for that development and doing the testing.

I take my hat off to him, £18000 for a car that will do less than 100 miles before conking out is a brave purchase.

Even a £100 banger will probably go furter than that.

America has moved its auto research budget from electrical to other forms of propulsion as they say there is no future in electic cars, here in Germany a new factory build to produce car batteries that can be changed at filling stations have been closed before they even started production as there is no demand or so they say.Maybe just maybe electric cars have a future but they have a long long way to go yet before the consumer will accept them.I personally am looking for a hybrid car which are much more practical at the moment this may change in the future of course.
