Renault Clio - Insurance Question - malct

I was just reading thought Honest johns Questions and replies on the weekly email regards Is no claims bonus linked to a car or the driver and in this instance he said that the NCD was on the car.

My question is regarding our own car insurance and i would imagine this maybe subject to individual insurance companies.

A little bit of history

Around 7 years ago our car was insured by the RAC with myself being named driver, My wife who had only recently passed her driving test had started working , So i informed the insurance company who then terminated the insurance and told me that in order to insure the car, Then the insurance would need to be in my wife's name and they allowed me to transfer my NCD over to my wife and told me that they could not be transferred the NCD back to me.

Moving onto 2022, I changed over to LV and they allowed me to insure the car in my name and moving the NCD back to myself, So the insurance is in my name and the main driver is my wife.

Today i have just had a renewal quote from LV and its £425 up from £375 but having a look on TCB Compare , I have found many quotes mid £200s , So my question is regards the NCD since at the moment i have full NCD while my wife last had NCD 23 months ago and i believe that you can lose your NCD if you have not insured a car in 2 years.

So basically, I am house husband and my wife works who is younger than me and ideally i would like to protect our NCDs, So looks like i might have to insure the car in my wife's name.

Maybe others in the group are in the same situation, 1 car owner , one person working and trying to protect their NCD

Thank you for any advice

If you only have one car, you can only use one NCD so I'm unsure what the issue is. Just insure the car for the main driver and make the other one a named driver like normal..

If you're planning to buy a second car, it might be worth thinking about but not in your current situation.

So is the NCD with the car and not with the individual? Since i always thought that NCD stays with the person who earnt them.

From Google

Can named drivers build a no-claims bonus?

If you are a named driver of a car, not the main driver, you usually won’t be able to build up a no-claims discount. However, if you then go on to take out your own policy with the same insurer, you may benefit from a discount.

No, the NCD 'belongs' to the driver, but you can only apply one at once.

Correction - NCD belongs to the driver, not the car, but you can have more than one NCD - for instance if you have NCD on your one car and then buy another, a second NCD will start to acrue.

I recently went through this when I bought a small city car to reduce reliance on a big diesel guzzler which was/is on full NCD - built up 3 yesrs NCD on the small car before selling it as insurance and MoT was costing more than I was saving.

What was stated was that the NCB was linked to the policy under that car, so the driver/insurer and not the car, has the NCB

The answer give does not appear well explained

I think that in the UK motor insurance market we put far too much weight on 'No Claims Discount'. Sure the number of years claim free, or rather the years in which you were not, will affect the premium but, like 'cost to change' when trading on car for another it's easy to be led up the garden path.

When we got a second car 25+ years ago I bought an old Pug 205 and Mrs B ran the more recent BX estate which was the family car. I took my NCD with me but with a little shopping around Mrs B, who'd never had car insurance, was able to access various 'starter' etc discounts and paid little more for the BX than I had with 'full' NCD.

I suspect that when the OP moved insurance to his wife there was a similar arrangement.
