Car insurance: help a novice out? - QueenofSpades

Hi folks, apologies if this has been covered but I've had great advice from here so I'm back with another question.

Purchased a car via PCP from Cinch (I know -- caveat emptor, but friends had a good experience with them). It's arriving Tuesday and I have a mechanic coming to inspect it Wednesday, so I can return it to Cinch if any issues. They have the 14 day window for this.

HOWEVER...

This is an insurance question. Obviously I need to tax and insure the vehicle. BUT what if I've paid for a year's insurance and then decide to return the vehicle to Cinch?

Secondly, do I need GAP insurance on a second-hand PCP vehicle?

Very grateful for any thoughts. Thanks!

I'd never consider PCP for a used car, its expensive and if the vehicle is out of warranty you could be faced with a huge repair bill on a car you don't own, but have to keep in good repair if you intend on handing it back.

If you buy insurance and then return the vehicle you need to cancel the insurance immediately.

The insurance company may keep the policy open for a time to allow you to transfer it to another vehicle (which may require a change in premium) but if you want a refund you will be charged admin fees.

GAP is down to you. If you write the car off in a week or 2 years will you be able to pay off all the debt on the PCP? Insurance will only pay market value so GAP is intended to pay the difference between that and the debt. Be wary that you are then dealing with your insurance and GAP insurance arguing over how much the GAP actually is.

I'm with dvd on the insurance issue. You need insurance before you can obtain VED for the car (Road Tax) and, although you will pay proportionally more for a Short Term Policy, it will save you money should you decide to return the car and will alleviate the pressure on you to make a wrong decision should the mechanics report be questionable or vague.

As for GAP Insurance (Guaranteed Asset Protection), this can cover various scenarios. Some will pay the difference between an insurance settlement and the original Invoice price of the car, whilst others will only insure up to the Finance Settlement value. Check that you know the exact terms of the cover. Obtain comparisons - there is a link on this site for starters - and check on-line quotes before accepting what the seller is offering. I used to buy GAP policies wholesale for a Motor Group, and, although recent threats by the FCA have improved the customer offers tremendously, there are still big differences in the value of policies offered.

Good luck with your deliberations and with your ultimate choice of actions.

most car insurance companies will have a cooling off period during which you can cancel.

Thanks so much for the replies folks. Came to my senses and cancelled the order. PCP on a used car was madness! The search continues…

I bought gap insurance on a new car and felt I’d wasted my money. Yes-luckily I didn’t have an accident. I wouldn’t consider it again though and under no circumstances would I fall for the trick of buying it with a second hand vehicle.

It's worth checking your car insurance - some policies will replace like-for-like if the car is less than 12 months old - when this occurs it's possible to get gap insurance starting at 12 months, and at a reduced price!

DO NOT buy GAP insurance form a dealer.

You will pay up to 500% more than an insurance company.
