…..there’s not much to add at a mere 28500 miles and a quarter of what I expect to be a 20yr lifespan. As an oldie’s runabout it has an easy life apart from my occasional red-line ‘Italian tune-up’. I have just done a wheels-off preMoT inspection and general clean up. Brake pipes were painted with some old Hammerite and a fair bit of rust was hammered off the disc rims. There is of course no sign of underbody rust. The Goodyear Vector 4seasons tyres (oddly I had thought they were Michelin Crossclimates) swapped front to rear at 15,500 miles, still have 3mm of tread; the front brake pads 4mm and the rear pads 5mm. Overall fuel consumption for our mainly suburban journeys is an acceptable 43.4 mpg but it was bought with performance rather than economy in (my;-) mind. It can actually do well over 50mpg on its rare motorway journeys so long as 70mph is not exceeded.

Some say Puretech engines burn oil excessively. It’s done 8500 miles since my oil change in April 2023 and the level is now 17 mm below the 3.5 litre maximum mark. It takes 1 litre from min to max, a distance of 40mm on the dipstick. That’s 25mls per mm, assuming uniform loss. So 17 x 25 = 425mls of oil used. That equates to 20,000 miles per litre which seems fine for a sporty little turbo engine at this young age. No need to add more as the next change is imminent at 30,000 miles and in winter the quicker it warms up the better. The cambelt looks good and is no wider than my homemade cambelt width checking tool.

Despite the minor niggles of a radio that won’t stay on for long unless the engine is restarted and a pathetic peep of a horn, Mrs F and I continue to be well pleased. It is not yet old enough to tell whether Peugeot’s purported superior mechanical and bodily longevity still pertains but we hope that it will see us out. It cost exactly £17k ‘on the road’ so eventually it should conform to our practice of having nice cars which cost only a few hundred rather than thousands of pounds a year to own.
