Our caravan weighs 1600kg unladen, so I was wondering what the best cars that do not cost and arm and a leg may be to tow it with. I had a Mondeo previously that could tow 1800kg. Wondering if I should go for same but estate this time (not many about), or try for something different like Skoda Superb.

Any caravan owners have other thoughts. Cannot afford an SUV really, but willing to look at anything people think worth a squint at.

Looking to spend between £10 - £13K.

Thanks.

Caravan people love Ssangyong.

If you get a Korando Pioneer, you can tow 2,000kg with a relatively small car. The bigger models will tow up to 3,500kg in some cases.

Comfy and roomy.

But petrol not much worse on fuel consumption.

If you liked the Mondeo, it's worth looking at a Ford Kuga which has effectively superseded it.

Although SUV shaped, it's really just a big hatchback rather than a full blown SUV like a Land Rover etc.. A lot of these "crossover" type vehicles (Qashqai etc) don't have particularly great towing capability as they share platforms with fairly small hatchbacks, but the Kuga seems to match or slightly better what the Mondeo can do depending on what engine you pick. It's a perfectly decent car to drive around in the rest of the time too.

clicked on the link and what a great selection of suggestions.

First is a 13 plate Chevy for £399, never a good car, hate to think what a £399 example would be like

2nd is a Peugeot 107. Since when has that been a tow car.

Do I need to look further.

I'm not seeing any cars at all. I think the link may be playing up.

Just clicked on it again and still the same except new at No 1 is a Corsa electric for about £17000. But could that actually tow?

That’s a fairly hefty caravan. Agree with other comments about the usefulness of SUV-type cars, most are just jacked-up hatchbacks. Weight is key- You need to focus on getting the heaviest thing in your budget, don’t just be led by manufacturers’ towing capacity data. I like a Superb, but they’re not heavy enough for the weight you’re pulling. My choice would be a BMW 5 or Mercedes E. both fairly heavy cars and RWD for good traction when towing. Both self-levelling when in estate body. Not without risk or potentially high running cost but you’re asking for a lot of car

Thanks for your replies.

My only concern with higher end cars are the cost of running and repairs, as I have to live on quite a tight budget. Will have a look at them though, and then look at cost of running and repairs.
