2020-on crossovers/SUVs with torque converters? - Oyarzabal

Hi,

I'm looking to help my mum get a basic reliable car. Problem is she absolutely can't handle anything other than a torque converter that will always hold on a hill. I'm trying to find her something 2020-on, under £15, crossover/SUV, petrol, and reliable but everything seems to be dual clutch. Are there any newer cars with torque converters or do I have to look at something a bit older?

Thanks.

There are 2020 Mazda CX5's out there that can be had for that sort of money. Reliable and with torque converter boxes. Otherwise there is the CX30 and the CX3 if the CX5 is too big. All available with torque converter boxes.

My 2018 Suzuki Vitara has a torque converter. I believe it's on the 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6 petrols, but not the diesel or more recent 1.5.

The BMW series 2 Active Tourer has a TC box; I am unsure if they fitted it in the 2.0-litre petrol or the 1.6 (or both).

I drove one a couple of weeks ago. You sit high, like in a cross-over, about the same size, with more internal space. Yes, it's a BMW, but apparently, hardly any vices. The one I drove was the 2.0-litre derivative and very refined, I thought.

In terms of T/C auto's, you have a whole gaggle of PSA/Stellantis options. Now yes there is the question of Puretech reliability re the wet belt, but if you accept what forum member (and owner of a Puretech equipped late old shape 2008 auto) John F says, 2019 on cars will be fined to having bets made of more suitable material. But that would let you choose from:

Citroen C3 Aircross, C4 Cactus, C4, and C5 Aircross

Peugeot 2008 and 3008.

Vauxhall Crossland and Grandland.

I would like to point out though that while I have not actually tried on a steep hill, I have not been aware of our current car, a Hyundai Bayon DCT, rolling back on hills. The Suzuki Ignis AGS we had before the Bayon definitely did roll back, but I am also fairly sure the Honda Jazz CVT we had before the Ignis didn't roll back either.

I say this because a £15k budget is just enough to get into a Toyota Yaris Cross (this is a self charge hybrid and uses a CVT). In terms of reliability and running costs, this should surely be top of the list for a small SUV/Crossover type. And don't forget, the warranty extends up to 10 years assuming dealer serviced.

We are still very pleased with MrsF's 2019 Peugeot 2008 1.2 puretech EAT6, which is a TC auto. It holds on hills v well.

On second thoughts, and after a closer look Autotrader, maybe not the Yaris Cross. Yes there are two (being sold by the same place) at a fiver under £15k, but they are higher miles at around 70k (though that in itself shouldn't be much concern because these are exceptionally reliable) and entry level Icon spec. Next up after those two is over £17k. But there is also the C-HR, a little bigger, also hybrid with CVT, also very reliable, but more coupe like styling.

My 21 reg 1.4 Suzuki Vitara has a conventional tc gearbox and is a delight to drive.
