Sort of semi related to another post

I have a 2005 1.9tdi passat estate. I can believe how much it swallows in its boot...sofas you name it. Better than some vans..only cost me £1200, engine brilliant , bodywork shot but still holding together lol

..but I am looking at maybe upgrading to a newer estate/4x4/suv...maybe £5k...prefer petrol and auto but not absolutely essential

The dimension of the boot with the rear seats down is

Length: 70" (177 cm) x Width:41" ( 104 cm) Height: 31" ( 78 cm)

Anyone recommend something thats has at least that size boot.. and easy on the eye lol

cheers

there are several estate cars with similar sized boots (or larger) but it's more likely to be what is available for the budget in the current inflated (albeit falling back) market, in what condition, & does it need to meet LEZ etc. standards or other requirements.

However, you could start by looking at Skoda Superbs.

While it is very easy to find the boot capacity in litres, it isn't so easy to find those actual dimensions. But even looking at estate cars with a comparable boot capacity isn't that easy because a 2005 Passat could be either of two generations, because that was the year the B6 replaced the B5. That matters because the B6 had more than 100 litres greater capacity than its predecessor.

As for easy on the eye?, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A car you like the look might be repulsive to me or vice versa!.

I'd be interested to know a bit more detail on what you mean re the bodywork being shot?. The body panels are hung over the frame, essentially just to keep the weather out. It is the frame which provides the strength, so as long as there are no exposed sharp rusty edges, it shouldn't be a problem. If the car is still sound mechanically (and it sounds like it is), I think I might be inclined to spend a bit of your budget tidying it up and just keep it. Partly because in todays market, £5k wont actually go that far, but also because, "better the devil you know"!

Thanks for the comments

It's a 2005 VW Passat estate b5.5 1.9 TDI 100

Main issues are rotten front wings , rear arches and bottom of doors

The subframe etc if fine

Cheers

B5.5 Same body and mechanical underpinnings as my previous 2003 mkI Superb 1.9 pd 100 owned after 2015 by an ex colleague but failed an MOT badly a couple of years ago re rot on sills / rear wheel arches. I suspect yours might not be far away re condition so might not worth investing in new wings etc.

Where roughly are you looking? We can make recommendations all day but at this money it’ll all depend on what’s available nearby.

Sorry, Cheshire

You have one of the best ever estates.

But how about a Mercedes E320 CDI Estate 2006 facelift model which is within your budget and has none of tge emissions stuff to go wrong just like your passat

Estate/4x4/Suv with BIG boot - Bill940

Thanks.. so you would say the e320 is as good ?

Recommend the facelift model Cdi model 2006- 9 . No complex emissions stuff. Great MPG , not quite as good as your Passat . But a lovely relaxed six cylinder engine which is amazingly good on fuel.

Best if you have a MB specialist like I have at Rushden .

Just be aware that any problems with a 18 year old Merc are not going to be cheap to fix.

Better off going for a more mainstream brand, you will get a newer car which can of course still have issues.

If the rust on the Passat is fixable and the car is reliable fix it.

I side with the 'keep what you have' view. Possibly spend a bit of money tidying the body. Having said that unless appearances are important I don't think I would bother. Sharp edges might cause a problem with the MOT but can be easily dealt with, if a bit crudely. My neighbour has a 2003 Golf TDI, both wings have holes due to the foam holding moisture but some filler will sort it for another year.

You have all made.me think about looking for 2 wings...maybe that would be wiser !

At this money I’d be aiming to keep things as simple as possible and I’d stick with straightforward mass market models that parts are easy to source for and any garage can fix or service.

Spotted this in a private sale. Bit hea*** like in black but if it checks out as the low mileage second motor the seller states then it could make a good £3k family workhorse. The 1.6 petrol lacks torque but they’re generally robust and will easily keep pace with traffic flow on any road, you’ll just have to drop a gear on some hills and to overtake, which is no great hardship. There’s no turbo to worry about, no DPF, no complex automated manual gearbox etc etc. It will need a timing belt and water pump if there’s no invoice showing it’s been done recently.

Beg borrow or steal another £1500 over your budget and this is an option. Newer and better on go go juice, it’s a post emissions scandal recall so less likely to suffer DPF issues but this still wasn’t the best engine VAG ever built. Good car though and a good VAG specialist will know how to get round any issues cheaply enough if you have one nearby - most large towns have one. One owner car suggests that it’s been a good one.

Possibly a bit risky Googling that SLO :-0

(though maybe using uppercase helps!)

Remember having to research Willow Faggot's for erosion control on a job once, that got some interesting Google hits.
