Opinions on the below are sought.

My previous car suffered a catalytic exhaust theft whilst parked away from our drive.

The claim cost was high but the work was eventually done. I sold the car shortly afterwards.

Whilst toying up a potential replacement, I'm the 2nd named driver on my wife's car and policy. We're both in our 50s with clean licenses and long NCBs of 10 years plus.

We recently got a renewal quote for her policy, which was unsurprisingly 40% higher than the previous year, so shopped around for a better quote, and found one easily.

However, when adding in the information that the catalytic convertor was stolen from my previous car (classed as 'Malicious Damage'), the claim goes up nearly £70, across all insurers.

I'm not sure that's fair. Obviously I wasn't in any way to blame for the cat theft, yet the insurance is hiked regardless, despite nothing else detrimental on my insurance history or driving record in decades.

Thoughts?

Presumably if you weren't added to her policy the increase wouldn't apply to her renewal quotes, is that workable for you?

A phone call to her own insurer and some friendly bargaining might prove fruitful, it has for many of us who were looking at increases this year, either way £70 penalty for what would have been a sizeable claim if genuine parts were used isn't the end of the world.

Will your own NCD be affected come renewal for your car or did you have a protected policy, if no protection you could be doubly hit when your renewal comes due.

Unfortunately while you are not actively to blame the cat was stolen while the car was under your responsibility. Also, a NCD is not a No Blame Discount.

Still blooming annoying and I too would feel aggrieved at paying more. Good luck in persuading the insurer to relent.

That's the crux for me. I'm not responsible for crime spots or the design of an exhaust system. I'm just the (additional) driver, and have been the additional driver on this car for some time.

Putting financial blame onto this policy feels unjust.

I'll take it up with the insurer and see what they say.

Different situation to you but my insurance premium went up from £420 to £1960 this year. I had an accident earlier this year, car in front pulled onto roundabout and stopped, I was looking right to see if it was clear, it was so my fault. Premium came in few months later so thought it was down to the accident but on checking on the net Lexus cars are being targeted by thieves and this is the main reason of the increase. Now not all insurance companies will insure Lexus NX/RX models.

That’s interesting LC. There was a vulnerability in some older Lexus models where thieves could get access to the car’s electronic systems from behind a headlight and get doors open and start the engine. I understand that newer models are better protected (until they find some other vulnerability) but your post suggests they are being targeted in crash~for-cash type situations? I wonder why Lexus should be singled out for this?

sorry to hijack the thread.

Until someone in charge finally realises Saudi Quatar and other Arab states have their priorities right and declares all this criminality stops now or real instant punishments result, we'll continue to an increasingly lawless state.

Insurance companies put premiums up for any reason they dream up. No claims bonus dosen't get you a brass razoo off your next premium. It's all a stitchup.

Well I for one would rather have my 70% discount than pay the full price.

Premium for our 2 cars (Superb PHEV and Fabia) in November with Aviva was just over £600, take away the discount and we would be paying over £2000.
