Infiniti Q30 but Mercedes parts - Front vibration cause - Diagnostic help - Joe-Man Wan

Hello everyone,

I have had a bit of a car vibration issue in the front + steering wheel in my Infiniti Q30 but can't seem to figure out why even after getting a few opinions from different garages. Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

Basically the car vibrates from the OSF front driver side when it is cruising at 65mph+ and get worse as speed increases and some mechanical play can be felt right under where the clutch pedal area is (mine is auto).

Have done wheel bearing, new tire, new brake, wheel alignment and wheel balancing but couldn't resolve the issue. Engine and gearbox are running smoothly.

No strange noise can be heard but suspect inner CV joint, control arm or bushing. What could be the possible cause? Any thoughts?

Many thanks, Joe

Faulty tyre?

Driveshaft worn?

Sounds like a driveshaft to me.

Try swapping the wheel for one off the rear, if that doesn't help then like the other posters consider drive shaft.

Before replacing drive shaft try repacking the CV joints with the correct grease, many's the time doing so has seen CV couplings and therefore drive shafts last many more years.

Bit unclear. You mean radial play in the d*****ine (That's D R I V E L I N E, Mary) is greater driver side than the other side? If so I suppose that might be a clue.

If swapping the wheels around doesn't move the problem, and it looks like the driveshaft, you then have to decide if its bad enough to need doing right away, or can wait for a bit.

I'd probably favour the latter.

I wouldn't say radical play, but when driving on regular city road, you can feel the road vibration is dampened through the tyres but when it gets to the driveshaft it somehow is not further dampened, but like a slightly loose bolt and some metal on metal rubbing kind of feel but too minor to cause steering wheel vibration at low speed. You can feel that under the foot well on both sides in the front.

No leaking or any noise from CV boot, could driveshaft be worn without these?

Tyres are brand new as another attempt at resolving the issue

Yep. Driveshaft has two ends...

You haven't eliminated a wheel till you've swapped one over, could be one slightly out of shape...i hadn't realised how fragile some of these oversized alloy wheels are until my daughter's chap had to have several on his hot Honda straightened out after driving on typical Northamptonshire third world road surfaces, he's now got rid of the OE 19" set made of cheese and fitted a set of 18" BBS in their stead.

CV joints don't have to be noisy to need some fresh grease, repacking my own CV joints over the years as part of long term maintenance has seen me personally never have to replace a drive shaft, don't think i've replaced a CV joint either come to think of it, the inner joint is just as important as the outer.
