The Times comment this morning :-
"The car, which has been a bestseller in the UK and Europe for decades, will undergo a “mid-life” update next year but it will be the final model with an internal combustion engine.
Thomas Schäfer, the chief executive of VW cars, said: “With that, the car is set until the end of the decade. Then we have to see how this segment develops. If the world develops completely differently than expected by 2026 or 2027, we could develop a totally new vehicle — but I don’t think it will. So far that is not expected.”
But what could he mean?:-

Zombie Apocalypse Mad (Add Blue) Max edition...
...or something unexpected, maybe powered by non-nuclear renewable energy sources, engineered to be repairable with generic tools and open system software, and not having any obsolescence or massively cynical fraudulent and illegal cheats built in.
Would need quite a shift in the bizniz model, though.

Out of all the Golf models, my favorite has to be the Mk 2 GTI. It was the first car I ever bought with my own money, and it made me feel like a king of the road. The sleek design, smooth handling, and unbeatable performance made it a true standout in my eyes. And don't even get me started on the incredible sound system - every drive felt like a concert!

The Golf mk1 was a revelation when it was launched in the 70s and the mk1 1800 gti was all conquering, only really surpassed by the sublime 1800 mk 2, 8 valve, a superbly balanced, quick, economical hatch. I had the Mk2 Golf and the build quality was excellent in terms of materials used and rustproofing. But in the hot hatch race, the Golf was toppled by the 205gti, in terms of sheer driving enjoyment if not robustness. But VW let it slip with the mk3, and it wasn't as special any more. The other notable golf was the 1.6 GTD, a sporty rapid diesel for the time. What replaces it? The ID3 I guess, or something along those lines. Times are changing fast!

My wife had two a mk 4 and a mk 6 2.0 gti DSG in tornado red and a very nice car it was. Ideal size and very practical town or mway. The whole Golf range has proved to be a best seller and justified in my opinion

I thought the mark 5 was rubbish !
|
A car broker told me that he liked to sell Golf’s because out of every ten car buyers eight would settle for a Golf.
Whats wrong with the Mk 5 TDI 1.9; Davey ?
|
I had a Golf 7.5. It was OK, but had the worst seats of any car I've ever owned. It liked to suddenly brake sometimes too.
|
My first car was a MK1 Golf. Slow, noisy, rusty, leaked and burned oil, dreadful brakes but it was cheap and mostly reliable. It represented independence - priceless. Probably better than many 70s cars such as the Allagro.

Nothing wrong with the Mark 5 1.9 diesel, the one I remember was the 1.4 petrol and it was dreadful both performance and fuel economy.
The mark 5 had a few common component issues , VW dealers mixed response to the issues.

Bought silver Golf Mk 7 1.4 petrol ACT 13 reg dsg in 2015, amazing car, speedy yet over 40mpg, useful features like headlamps 'turning' with steering at night, full leather, sold to friend 3 years ago, still going fine - couldn't fault it.

Agreed - the Mk5 was an awful car for quality. The worst car I've ever owned with lots of cost-cutting in evidence (to boost VW profits and also perhaps, to pay for the new style of body construction?). Even the 1.9TDI engine seemed to have had the attention of the bean-counters!

I used to love VW as a manufacturer. The Golf was solid d gold used stock right up until and including the Mk IV, the Passat of the same era was a brilliant thing too. Sadly the bean counters took over and quality plummeted with later generations in favour of gadgets and volume. Although I personally favoured the Jetta my two favourite Golf’s were the Mk II GTI 8v, it was solid yet gutsy and good to drive, really all the car you needed. The Mk IV 1.9 TDi (130) was bombproof and did everything right, beyond the ultimate handling fun of a Ford Focus.
