Volkswagen Golf Estate 2015 - Wing Mirror Fallen off - Kankerot

The wing mirror on the passenger side has fallen off, but it seems there is a mirror behind, I'm confused as to what's happened.

So was the piece that came off stuck onto the original mirror? If so, why?

I would think that someone previously has fitted one of those stick on mirror glass replacements on top of the original mirror glass.

The original mirror glass was cracked, VW parts prices being as they are, the previous owner decided on a cheaper route?.
