MG4 - Electric Car to Qatar - Ethan Edwards

Dunno if anyone else has been following this.

Four Welsh Footy fans are driving an EV to Qatar ,( from Cardiff) to watch the WCup.

Well they've reached Amman in Jordan....and it appears they've tried to cross into Saudi enroute to Qatar. Nearly made it only about 1200 miles to go.

Turned away from Saudi border...it appears all RHD vehicles are strictly forbidden from entering the KSA. Even if just passing through. I think this problem is insurmountable. They can't drive to Qatar without going through the KSA.

Watching the site to see what's next... Maybe drive to a red sea port and get a ferry to Qatar if one exists..Qatar also appears not to allow RHD either. Seems some research wasn't done...

Brand new MG4 is a good value new EV 280mile range and seems to have performed flawlessly.

Any thoughts?

Maybe reverse across Saudi? After all an EV will theoretically go backwards as quickly as it’ll go forwards and no need to worry about lack of airflow to a radiator.

Brilliant idea!

Obtain an old steering wheel plus column from local scrappie, weld/bolt it to the LH dashboard (third world mechanics are good at this sort of thing), and attach it to the existing wheel with a shaped rubber belt, e.g. made from thin bicycle tyres so it doesn't slip off the wheel rims.

Or just trailer it through Mr Bonesaw's benighted corrupt theocracy as fast as possible.

It occurs to me that the box trailer option might work. Any fans of the original "Knight Rider" out there? Of course, that would prevent the team from claiming to have driven all the way there under electric power.

Unless an appeal can be made to the King of KSA to lay on a police escort and make one exception just this once, the only (extremely) remote possibility would be for the car to suddenly become the property of an accredited ambassador. Under an international convention (Vienna at a guess) an ambassador can take his/her personal car into a foreign posting and use it there with full diplomatic protection.

This is the only way LHD cars can ever get into Australia, another country with strict restrictions on "wrong wheeled" cars, which led to a booming car conversion industry there.

Since MG will be getting some publicity out of this, my suggestion is find the closest dealer and arrange to swap cars with a left hooker for a month. There is one in Jordan. Then press on. Reportedly they've tried for four days to talk themselves into the KSA. Not going to do them any good as Qatar have the same rules.

Well it's an odd result. Social media is showing the guys in Qatar. But the car is reporting itself to be still in Amman. No word on how they got there.
