Hi all,
Just watched a Bangers & Cash programme (Mathewsons of Thornton-le-dale) A vintage car was up for auction. It was plainly badged AUSTEN & referred to in the programme as AUSTIN in pronunciation. I've tried the internet for such a model, but always get it spelt as AUSTIN.
Weird or what? Thanks for any replies.

There was a driver around just after the war called Austen May.
Not aware of any cars bearing his name though.

No, new one on me. Austin was obviously one of the companies subsumed into BLMC/ARG, or whatever they were called on any given day.
It’d be interesting to see a screen grab - my guess is someone changing the ‘I’ to an ‘E’ to somehow personalise the car.

Thanks for the replies, but the badge on the rad cover, was as authentic as any other badged car, certainly wasn't made-up. I've trawled the internet, but no matter how I word the query, the results all refer to the Austin makes.

What was the car? Like, was it obviously and Austin 7, A30. maxi etc?

What series/episode was it so we can take a look?

I had ordered a "SONIC" badge, (available on a US model) to replace the "stonic" badge on the back of the Kia i bought last year.
It's easy and always has been to get a chrome or other badge made up.

As for when it was shown could be a problem, as it was one I had recorded. I'll see if I can find it & post up. As for type of car it was, it was a quite old sedan type, with so called suicide doors. It looked pretty solid & the blurb that Dereck gave it was good enough that it went for £11,500. The seller had uprated the engine, fitted hydraulics, & I think fitted power steering. The item Dereck pointed out as being a b***** let-down, were the bolt-on mirrors he'd also fitted!!!
Hope I can find it.

Sadly I must have removed the programme after viewing it. I'll check the programmes as they come back. It's a regular on the Yesterday channel.

Series 2 episode 10 has an Austin 16 which had been modified by the owner (including Ford Transit mirrors which looked awful), is a saloon and has suicide doors. But it is an Austin, not an Austen.
Also featured in that episode was a ropey looking Scimitar and some VW campers, does that ring any bells?

Series 4 episode 1 had a 7 Ulster with no doors at all, and episode 2 had an A30 with the doors the usual way around.

@ badbusdriver.
Thanks for your reply, which, I think is the episode I'm referring to especially with the mention of the mirrors. If you can view the episode, is it not badged as an Austen? If it's reads Austin, I need to book a visit to Specsavers. Thanks for all the replies.

It does read Austin, but don't be too hard on yourself. The stylised lettering, with a bit of wear and tear, means it wouldn't be difficult to misread what it says without getting up close and personal!.

Used to be script - "Austin of England." I remember a colleague whose car's badge had broken and the last bit of "England" dangled from its fitment. We would regularly inform him that his gland had slipped......

Here was I wondering if it was an Austin ten (Austen?).
